Great Children's Book
The Fairchild's are my favorite Kentucky famly. The now deceased Rebecca Caudill (she died in 1989) has written a series of four books about their adventures featuring Bonnie, the youngest. There are five children, Althie, Chris, Emmy, Debby, and Bonnie. They live in northern Kentucky with their parents in a simple house. The family life portrayed in these books is warm, realistic, funny, and touching. Bonnie's disappointment when she gets a sunbonnet instead of a hat, their pet goose, ice skating on the pond, going to the schoolhouse in the woods, are told through her eyes with a fresh spirit and a sense of joy.I love all four books about the Fairchilds.

The 2nd boook in a quartet set n Appalachia. Read to 4 - 7 year olds.
The Fairchild family of Appalachia people these stories. The work of Rebecca Caudill is often likened to the stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder: they are contemporaries. This quartet of stories by Caudill is for a slightly younger audience than the Wilder series. The 3rd book in this quartet of stories, called UP AND DOWN THE RIVER, is an outstanding story and worth wading through the 2 prequels.
