Flickering lights, plug got very hot, then broke - 5 mins after taking out of packet!
I bought this device to attach to a set of string garden lights (the plug is indoors with the lead trailing out of a window) as they were a bit bright and I was worried they'd be shining in my neighbours windows too much. For the first 5 minutes of being plugged in, it seemed to work okay, and I turned the brightness down to around half way. But after a while I noticed the lights starting to flicker and pulse - before turning off entirely. I was worried that the lights had blown, but thankfully when I removed the dimmer plug they worked again as usual. Also the dimmer plug had become VERY hot (I suspect quite a fire hazard). It might be that the string of lights placed too much load on the dimmer plug and that it's not intended for this use, Although there wasn't a lot of documentation or guidance on what to not use the plug for! But either way, didn't work for me and I have applied for a refund. I certainly wouldn't recommend leaving these plugs unattended when you go out.

and until recently it did a perfect job in dimming a table lamp
Bought this device several months ago, and until recently it did a perfect job in dimming a table lamp. One day, when I turned on the lamp, it turned on for a moment and then gone both the bulb filament and the dimmer. I tried to repair it, however, I discovered that the screws holding the appliance are non-standard, and without a special tool one cannot open it (see picture attached). I decided to sacrifice the thing and cracked it open. It turned out that its circuit does contains a fuse which is gone (picture attached). However, instead of being placed in a holder, so that one could easily swap it with a new one, this fuse is soldered into the PCB board. The series of events was pretty clear now - the incandescent was nearing the end of its lifetime, the moment it was going out, it caused a surge in current causing a blown fuse. Overall, I was somewhat disappointed to discover that such a simple device is designed in a way to render it unrepairable: first, one cannot open it using standard tools, second, the fuse is soldered in. I cannot explain it by anything, but a company's deliberate plan to make it so, and force you to buy a new one, after your old one is gone. This is a good example of planned obsolescence, which is not unheard of these days. I was just surprised to find this in such a simple device. It worked only for several months, which is quite frustrating. All these numerous poor reviews of people complaining about short lifespan totally makes sense to me now.

It doesn't really work
A dimmer switch you plug into the wall socket and then plug your lamp into it. Less than £10! Too good to be true? Yes because it doesn't well. My lamp has halogen bulbs so maybe that's the reason- if it is it would be useful to be told that. Anyway, you dim the light about a quarter of the way on the dial - it makes a little difference but then the light just cuts out. I think this is not a universal dimmer solution - it may work on some lights (judging by other reviews) but it doesn't on mine. So you can take your chances: if it works it is a bargain but if it doesn't it's a waste of money. Too many non/obscurely branded items on Amazon may or may not work and have contradictory reviews so you are taking a chance. Not really good enough.

Horrible experience
Almost immediately after ordering these dimmers for halogen floor lights I discovered that they were not compatible, this info. was not on their website ,I contacted them immediately to cancel ,at this point the order did not show" dispatched or even ready to dispatch "normally with Amazon until "Dispatched" is shown you have the right to ask to cancel, but this was a third party sale, and despite the fact it was Easter and they couldn't or wouldn't get near a post box for 3 days they flatly refused to cancel, saying all my arguments were reasonable and true but they still would not cancel due to the number of orders. They suggested that I return the item and they would refund minus postage as it was my fault ! or i should examine the post at the door and refuse the parcel, to get a refund. Next day I held the busy and somewhat reticent delivery guy up whilst I inspected the labels of post from 4 days,I could not see their name Babz so I accepted the parcel only to find when I opened it was the dimmer switches but sent from another company recorded delivery, and I could not possibly have identified the switches from the outside and it cost me over £5 to return them as they were "too big to go through a letter box" ,this and the fact they were free post to start with and only £ 9 ish makes me wonder just how much they are actually . How's that for customer service? So buyer do BEWARE, according to them they sell other stuff.

Sort of works with some brands of bulb
The first dimmer unit kept flickering and changing brightness at low settings. The seller was kind enough to send a replacement. I have tested this replacement with three brands of dimmable bulbs: Phillips, Dial and Luminate. I have to say that only the Dial seem to work reasonably well. The Phillips had the same changing brightness issue but not as bad as when using the original dimmer device. The Dial and Luminate work better but in both cases, when set to a low level the light fails to come on after switching off and back on. If I repeat the procure then the Dail bulb comes on at a low setting. So, on the whole, this dimmer is not good but useable with the Dial bulb. A few weeks later and I have to knock another star off. I'm afraid this simply does not work. I've tried a range of bulbs now and in all cases the light is unstable at low levels and fails to come back on (at low levels), when switched off and back on. I suppose it might be useful if you expect to have to continually manually adjust it but even then it is not able to maintain a constant low-level brightness. Reluctantly therefore, I have to say that it is not fit for purpose,

Not really happy with the way this product is inferred to be British - it's just a piece of Chinese ... ! Quality control is terrible. I ordered two, only one worked! It's just highly annoying that nothing is tested, one in a batch is tested, so if one in a thousand worked, the rest should be fine - according to them. NOTE: This is only capable of 300W, 1.25 Amp and NOT 13A as some have suggested. Fine for a lamp or two, no good for much else! I emailed the company - Mercury, no answer from them! Typical junk with no support. MAKE SURE YOU ORDER VIA AMAZON WITH FREE RETURNS IF ITS FAULTY - YOU'LL NEED TO RETURN AT LEAST ONE! After my gripe, the one that does work works fine, good steady dimming from zero to full. I used on a 250W Infra-Red Lamp - so far lasted being left on for two nights! Plugin Dimmer Switch

Flickers uncontrollably
Bought this for the main lamp I have in the living room, so I could dim the light when needed as it is sometime rather bright dispite changing the bulbs for dimmer ones. I plugged the dimmer switch into the wall, then the lamp into the dimmer switch and turned it on. When the dimmer switch is turned all the way up, the lamp remains bright but as soon as you start to dim the light, all the lamp does is flicker, it does dim the light slightly but flickers uncontrollably. I tried this with a couple of other lamps and the same thing happens. If it worked, I would say it was good value for money but as it doesn't it was just a waste. Unfortunately I hadn't tested the product until a few weeks after receiving it, so did not ask for a refund. It may just be I have a faulty product. Hopefully others have better luck.

Doesn’t work, find another option
Similar to several other reviews, I’ve found that this item simply doesn’t work. I’ve tried it with a variety of different dimmable light bulbs and it has either done nothing at all (so the lamp just turns on at full brightness and doesn’t adjust), or flickers and goes from full brightness to almost turned off with nothing in between. Annoyingly I’ve missed the window for returns as I had thought it was the bulbs and kept trying more and more, but it’s clearly this switch that’s the problem. Would not recommend.

Accessories connected to the Dimmer Plug.
It is important to check the compatibility of the light that you attach to it.

useless piece of equipment
this is quite useless. Sometimes everything working fine, then all of a sudden the light starts flickering, which is dangerous for my light, it can burn it. It is not worth it, there are better ways.
