Doesn't this get hot itself? Putting laptop on bed does not play well with ventilation. How is this better?

The top of the stand (the darker part) is hard, almost like placing your laptop on a table. The lighter part is the cushion, which can really sit on any surface. So if you like sitting your laptop on a bed, it gets ventilated just as well as it would on a table. I was very surprised, because the description didn't give me the impression the top would be so sturdy.

Feels rather solid so foam probably. None of the wobbly movment of bean bag cushions.

Can you use this for to put A4 paper on, and is it firm enough for a writing surface?

This item is firm enough for a writing surface. The edge of the tray slopes off for around a centimetre. There is a rubber stop at the bottom and if A4 paper in portrait is put against this stop, the paper overhangs this ledge. (It does not overhang the board) I would not let this put you off as you would just use the paper overhanging the rubber stop at the bottom instead. I use for writing as well as for my pixel book. This is an excellent large quality tray.

Does a laptop mouse work effectively on this surface?

Yes, RunRabbit. But, there might not be enough space for the mouse since this is only designed to sit a laptop.
