How long can food be kept fresh in this?

If you freeze the ice pack, food can be kept cold for about 12 hours, packaged fruit is perfect for this because it keeps everything ice cold throughout the day. Generally for me it's anything from 4 hours upto 8 hours for the very best ice cold temps and 8-12 for cold temps. Hope this helps

Is it too big for toddler nursery lunch?

Yes. Probably. My daughter is a student nurse and needs it for placement. When you take enough food to cover your 12 hour shift. And it’s perfect for that
