The Coen brothers make their finest thriller since Fargo with a restrained adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel. Not that there aren't moments of intense violence, but No Country for Old Men is their quietest, most existential film yet. In this modern-day Western, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is a Vietnam veteran who needs a break. One morning while hunting antelope, he spies several trucks surrounded by dead bodies (both human and canine). In examining the site, he finds a case filled with $2 million. Moss takes it with him, tells his wife (Kelly Macdonald) he's going away for awhile, and hits the road until he can determine his next move. On the way from El Paso to Mexico, he discovers he's being followed by ex-special ops agent Chigurh (an eerily calm Javier Bardem). Chigurh's weapon of choice is a cattle gun, and he uses it on everyone who gets in his way--or loses a coin toss (as far as he's concerned, bad luck is grounds for death). Just as Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), a World War II veteran, is on Moss's trail, Chigurh's former colleague, Wells (Woody Harrelson), is on his. For most of the movie, Moss remains one step ahead of his nemesis. Both men are clever and resourceful--except Moss has a conscious, Chigurh does not (he is, as McCarthy puts it, "a prophet of destruction"). At times, the film plays like an old horror movie, with Chigurh as its lumbering Frankenstein monster. Like the taciturn terminator, No Country for Old Men doesn't move quickly, but the tension never dissipates. This minimalist masterwork represents Joel and Ethan Coen and their entire cast, particularly Brolin and Jones, at the peak of their powers. -- Kathleen C. Review: Great Film - Great film Review: There are lots of violent parts, well paced thriller. - Watched over two evenings, found it very slow paced, but I liked this, lot of shootings among Gand members over drugs, acting top rated, loved Josh brolin who finds the drug money then has to keep ahead of drug gang leader played superbly by Javier bardem, a very evil man. Will have to watch again in one sitting, as it was so entertaining, bit paced like Paris Texas movie, but didn't detract from this film, highly recommended viewing.

Do not read the book first!!
I am very glad that I did not read the book before seeing the film. This is because the film is very faithful to the book and would have spoiled the surprises for me. However, there are two very significant events near the end of the film that the book cleared up for me. The film well-deserved the four Academy Awards it won. Josh Brolin was also excellent and perhaps even underrated as Llewelyn Moss. Scottish actress Kelly MacDonald was also amazing, as was her West Texas accent as his wife Carla Jean. Tommy Lee Jones was as always a great pleasure to watch. His character of Sheriff Ed Tom Bell was a much more low-key character, although very significant than his U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard. The character does not offer a chance to participate actively in any of the film's many scenes of action and violence, although the opportunity does present itself on several occasions. Javier Bardem is just stunning as Anton Chigurh, the most chillingly evil film presence since Hannibal Lecter. Even the smallest roles of the supporting cast were well-played. Woody Harrelson is great in a brief appearance as Carson Wells, who is sent to seemingly reel-in or subdue Anton Chigurh, although the film does not offer a very clear explanation of his character or actions. It would seem that the character was sent on a damage control mission. The Academy Award winning cinematography by Roger Deakins presents a great look at the harsh and inhospitable landscape of West Texas. I only wish I had taken the time to see this great film on the big screen. It will stay with you long after you see it. It demands repeat viewings to fully appreciate. It is brutal and shocking, yet fascinating. I haven't been kept in such suspense and tension by a film for a very long time.

A film that unfolds and ends like no others in the Hollywood mainstream scene. Coen's at their top but right before their fall
I did not like it the first time. Now I think it is a very good film with a overall sense of destiny and hopeless sense of loss. Loss of humanity, god, values. The silent scenes, the silent characters, the sometimes mechanical and almost unreal actions and situations, now they all seem to me not like Coen having lost originality and just repeating themselves (as it will happen after this film, anyway, expect for A Serious Man), but like an inevitable approach to reduce in 2 hours and convey all the density of the book. And I also appreciate much more the ellipse right before the ending, when the story takes another direction, as well as I like the way all the characters leave the scene at the end of the story, each one like they are nothing but puppets in the absurd theatre of life. And I also loved the very ending, where there is no ending, no mainstream and reassuring conclusion. Unfortunately Coen will just copy themselves after that, continuing to follow the same cold approach and strategy, but with nothing else or more to say, thus resulting in dry and pointless new films, no more just essential, but just essentially boring. Blu ray is fantastic both for audio and video quality (the photography is remarkable)

Brilliant movie
I became interested in this movie after watching a YouTube video about it and I have not been left disappointed at all. Great acting, dark, gritty and suspenseful. I have nothing bad to say about it.

Yes Country For The Coen Brothers
For many a year, Joel and Ethna Coen, have been giving us the dramatic, the tragic, the action, and the humour, and No Country For Old Men is no exception, especially on Blu-Ray Disc. Based on the American Cormac McCarthy's novel this picture follows the story of a simple texan man, Llwelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) who happens to stumble upon a drug deal gone wrong and a case full of millions of dollars, it all seems to good to be true, it is. Moss is brutally and mercilessly hunted down by Anton Chigur, played by the electric Javier Bardam, who mind you bagged an Oscar for this, all the while Tommy Lee Jone's Character investigates, the story focusing on the contrast between his compassion and goodness and Bardam's brutal, violent and seemingly unstoppable reign of terror. Not only has this movie won several Academy Awards but it has also captured my focus, it's somewhat a typical Coen Movie, you have the dashes of action, the antisipation of story, and the hints of humour. It is exceptionally well-shot and in blu-ray the visuals get the best possible portrayl, crisp, tender and utterly tantalizing picture will have you imersed like you've never been imersed before, the sound too is fantastic, shots wizzing past and fantastically balanced audio will have you on the edge of your seat. If you enjoy the Coen Brothers you'll no doubt enjoy "No Country For Old Men", a masterpiece. 10/10 Picture - If you havent seen it, go now, if you have, go again. 9/10 Audio 10/10 Acting 8/10 Story - The Film does not stay true to its novel, entertaining none the less i assure you!

A film for old men, and anyone else with at least a decade of life experience.
Strange that so many reviewers take a jab at the film because of the ending. The quiet ending *was* the point. The Sheriff was irrelevant in this new, more violent time, in his heyday he was used to cuffing kids around the ear rather than booking them, and then seeing them generally turn into decent adults. But Javier Bardem's character, Anton Chigurh, is the personification of this new breed of "bad guy" that does deals out in the no-mans-land of the US/Mexican border areas. Remorseless and bereft of conscience, he sees murder simply as a means to an end. Against this new breed of criminal, the Sheriff is now an irrelevance, just so much chaff to be thrown to the winds of time. He couldn't stand in the way of these new criminals for a moment, and he knows it. This film is about the investigation that finally broke him, the couple he couldn't save, and which results in his handing in his badge, decamping with his wife to a safer, quieter spot and finally admitting that he is outmatched. Those who didn't read the book beforehand (I'd read it 2 years previously) were probably taken in by the action scenes in the various clips and teasers, and expected a full-on action adventure. For me, the film was faultless. The cinematography excellent, the dialogue true to the book, including some parts of the book I laughed aloud to read, e.g. "It's a mess, ain't it". "well, if it ain't, it'll do 'til the mess gets here". There was nothing here to dislike. Characterisation was excellent, the acting likewise, usually completely loose and natural. So, if you were one of those that didn't like the ending, please don't blame the film. Read the book while you're waiting for the film release, and don't be taken in by trailers in future.
