How long should the maximum spark length be if the system is in good shape? Would 1/4 inch max indcate a fault?

If you can get a spark to reach 1/4 of an inch on a sparkplug your doing well as your only talking mm with a sparkplug if it's for something else I'm sorry I can't help you but this tool is only an indicator as to how good your spark is hopefully this helps you

Basically it will fit anything that uses a spark plug, in my opinion it should just be called an ignition tester rather than an actual spark plug tester. I take the HT lead off the spark plug, push the brass end of the tester into the HT boot, ground the bulldog clip and turn over the engine to check for spark. I’ve found it very useful for troubleshooting ignition coils on small engines anyway.

Will this fit inside a Mercedes Bosch shielded cable end?

I am not familiar with Mercedes Bosch cable end, but it will fit any standard plug cap, so unless Mercedes use non standard spark plugs it should work.
