To clear windows would the dehumidifier need to be on all night or just 2/3 hours early in the morning? What does operating noise compare to?

The first thing you do, is to run it for several hours, to get your house/flat to much more normal humidity levels. So you do this for the first couple of days, keep it on the high setting as that uses the same amount of wattage than the medium setting (approx 650w). Then all you do is, use it for lets say 3 hours per day, keep it in a central location, like the hallway, close all window, and keep all the doors open. You might need to switch between upstairs hallway and downstairs hallway, or if you have a large place, goto individual rooms. Once this is done, you'll find that you wont have any or very little condensation in the mornings (it also heats up that area). Ofcourse it depends on your property, you need to close trickle vents. Low setting - noise is like a normal computer, I could sleep with that amound of noise, although some might not be able to. Medium setting Like a noisy computer, with its fan on full speed. High setting which is like a hoover on the low setting.

Has anyone else noticed a smokey haze and smell, that only happens occasionally?

All desiccant dehumidifiers will have a slight burning smell when first used and if not used for a long time It’s completely normal

Could someone please help me - I'm new to dehumidifiers. Approximately how long would i have to run this after a shower & to dry an airer of clothe ?

Depends how heavy the shower of rain was, and whether you spin dry your clothes before you hang them on the clothes airer. Might take eight hours or so.
