Magnets are what makes them stick. The magnets are quite strong. See if a magnet will stick to your dumbbells. If yes, then these will work.

Will these fit on the outside of pro-style Dumbbells?

If you have pro-style dumbbells (with the bolt protruding at the end), you will want to purchase the PlateMate Donut units. There is not enough "flat" surface area on traditional "pro-style" dumbbells for the hex units to fit properly. As mentioned by the other answers, these units will only stick to metal and will not work properly on your dumbbells if they are rubber encased.
