At Last.......a Diet that really works!!
I bought the book and followed it to the letter. I lost 9lb in the first two weeks "Induction" part of the diet and now I am on the "Ongoing Weight Loss" part, I am continuing to lose weight steadily. In four weeks, I have lost 1 stone in weight! I have been plump/overweight for the last 11 years and put it down to middle-age. I've tried all sorts of diets and always got bored and hungry and consequently returned to my unhealthy way of eating, Dr. Atkins has changed the way that I see food. I have been eating "like a King" for four weeks and have not felt hungry once! The weight is just dropping off and I feel so full of energy and 10 years younger. I used to suffer with various digestive ailments and always felt bloated. Now I feel so much better and all my ailments have disappeared. This is not such much a diet, more a way of life. I know that I can follow this way of eating for the rest of my life....it really isn't difficult and the whole thing makes so much sense. It's like waking up one morning a completely different person...and I like who I have become. Thankyou Dr. Atkins for giving me another chance to be slim and healthy. I recommend this book and this diet to all those who have tried everything and have failed miserably. You too could be eating steak with roquefort sauce, followed by strawberries and cream. Just get this book!

Vegetarian Atkins diet
I've been trying to loose weight for years. I've tried everything, but mainly I try to eat little and often and do at least an hours exercise 5 days a week. Nothing works... until this. I thought I would try this, just to see if cutting carbs out my diet would give my metabolism a boost. I have a thyroid problem and I take painkillers for a back problem, both of which slow the metabolism down. I read this book carefully and starting off by making a list of the foods/drinks you were allowed in the induction phase. I'm vegetarian so I simply swapped any meat/fish with quorn or soya products. Quorn an soya do contain some carbs, but not many. Anyway - I've been doing it (induction) for 12 days now and I have lost 11 pounds. I really didn't think this would work for me. I genuinely thought that atkins was for very overweight people who were perhaps lazy, never did any exercise and wanted an easy way to loose weight. I originally lost a stone by eating little n often and exercising, but then the weight-loss just stopped and nothing I did would shift it. (Anyway I won't go on about that). All I can say is - if this works for me, something with a VERY slow metabolism, then it can work for most people. And you can do this if you're a vegatarian. Yes its a bit harder as you haven't got quite the variety of meats and fish, but there are alot of quorn and soya products out there (or tofu if you like it - urgh). Just use you brain to plan your meals. It's all about planning out what you will be eating. This is a strict diet, but it does get results. I'm hoping the weight will keep coming off. I probs have another 4 stone to loose to get to my ideal weight.

Not everyone's cup of tea but food for thought
Everywhere you look in the media there is an article or photograph of some celebrity or other who is deemed to be overweight or has gone on the latest fad diet. So many of the diets come in an out of fashion as quickly as you can make a cup of tea. However the Atkins diet is one that has consistently been there in the background. Occasionally coming to the front and gaining some media attention, but more often than not just quietly going about it's business. It's worth noting that the Atkins diet presented to us in this book has some significant differences to the original book released towards the back end of the 20th Century. Dr Atkins himself openly admits that he got some things wrong last time....how refreshing for a change!! Very early on in this book you are introduced to a concept which you would do well to bear in mind throughout; This approach to food isn't designed to be just a fad diet that you do in order to lose weight. It's designed to alter your approach to and relationship with so that you make a lifestyle change for good. It takes a little while to get your head round it, but I promise you that it will make things significantly easier once you let it sink in. The first half of this book is mostly theory orientated and it is very tempting to skip straight through the 100 odd pages but I would strongly advise against. Stick with it, make a couple of cups of tea but stick with it because it will help you to feel so much better when you start thinking about taking on the changes Dr Atkins is suggesting. The second half of the book is dedicated to each of the four phases of Atkins with some sample menus and recipes towards the end. Yes, the changes suggested will not be to everyone's liking but to me it makes so much sense. Surely the fact that the Atkins way of life has survived for so long (and is still very popular) is proof enough that Dr Atkins knew his stuff and wasn't asking people to go to extremes to lose weight. Even if the entire Atkins change isn't to taste the book is worth a read just to see things from a different perspective, you'd be amazed how much of it you find yourself agreeing with. Why not just set yourself a small challenge after reading the book. Maybe cut out the caffeine, or alcohol or sugar. After the first couple of days you will be amazed how easy the transition is and I bet before long you'll be amazed at how you did things another way

It's like magic - but not for vegetarians
Be warned that if you are vegetarian, Dr Atkins says his diet would be too boring because you would have insufficient choice of protein foods. But if you're not, it's brilliant, and it really does reduce weight FAST with no hunger after the first few days. And despite what the scaremongers say, it *does* include green veg, and after the first fortnight it includes a wide range of veg and some fruit and is perfectly well balanced. Others have come along afterwards and you may find them presented in a way you like better: e.g. Nerys and India's Idiot Proof Diet is great and has a supportive forum pig2twig, which helps a lot. Or the Stone Age Diet. Atkins gives a lot of science information, and you may like that, or not. Many have read Atkins and worked out their own diet based on his theory: break your addiction to carbs and your insulin levels settle down and release you from hunger. And the weight drops off. And he also recommends you eat fresh food, not the processed stuff that is ruining the health of the western world. It's like magic, and you almost want to run about converting other fatties who are struggling with the establishment's insistence that we should all eat brown bread and potatoes to lose weight. But the research is starting to show that Atkins was right. And thousands of people will tell you it worked for them. He's The KING.

You will lose weight, and there could be a slightly better way
This diet works. I had success on it several years ago, and I have to admit that I didn't feel bad (like some people), and I loved eating all that meat. Atkin's theory about insulin control seems to be semi-valid, but you don't have to have a high animal-food diet to control that. Not all carbohydrates are the same. Some are the ones our bodies have evolved to live on, others are just highly processed versions of the former. It's the highly processed carbs that are the problem, and not ALL carbs. In particular sugar. This seems to drive appetite. If I eat sugar I just want to eat more and more. Salt on food has a similar effect. Whereas if I eat porridge oats, I feel full for ages(assuming I haven't added sugar). If I eat meat , eggs, nuts I also feel full for ages. If I eat some confectionary, or have a sugar ladden junk food ( quite often in the bread too ) I do not feel full for that long. If all you want to do is lose weight and not go into much details as to why it works, then Atkin's might be for you. These days I think the Paleo diet is a whole lot more sensible on many aspects, the main one being it has way more fibre so you will not get constipated. Also worth a look are "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell the author reckons that a high animal-based-food diet will make you prone to degenerative and chronic diseases at a much younger age and most likely kill you before your time, and in "Pure White and Deadly" John Yudkin fingers dietary sugar as correlated with heart disease , type II diabetes, liver disease amongst other things, which is pretty much a view held up by Dr Robert Lustig in his highly readable "Fat Chance: The bitter truth about sugar". Also beware of the glycaemic-index control books, the fructose part of sucrose (table sugar) doesn't raise it much, fructose does however deposit fat in your liver, which is very bad, almost as bad as alcohol for liver damage. Under some glycaemic control regimes sugar can be allowed and this is not good for the liver. Just read stuff about fatty liver and fructose. search the net, it will scare you. So what do I think about all of this now ? I suppose if you want to lose weight the sugar control definitely works , a sort of half way Atkins. There may evidence to suggest too much animal protein increases the chance of cancer, but then there are populations like the Innuit that eat lots of meat and don't seem to get the cancer prevalence of the high-sugar, high-everything else ( because sugar makes you feel more hungry ) western diet (as Lustig now calls "The Global Industrial Diet" ). The Innuit, at least on their original diet didn't have a whole load of sugar. The traditional Japanese diet didn't have a lot of meat, but then it also didn't have a load of sugar, and they seemed to live for ages and very healthily. So if you want to live the longest follow that diet. As for me , I'm adopting what is closest to Paleo diet.

A fantastic - scientifically literate book.
Used this book as the basis for a change of diet from mainly carbohydrates to reduced carbohydrates. The result was guaranteed weight loss and big improvements in blood fat figures - especially Triglycerides - the blood fat cited in the book as mostly responsible for heart disease. The late Dr. Atkins - a heart surgeon - was vilified by the MSM when he advocated reducing carbs - despite his diet plan being supported by scientific peers and showing clear beneficial results. Major junk food manufacturers had a lot to lose if his diet plan gained traction. There are fad diets all over the place - but this isn't one and stands out due to the medical rigour behind it. Many other diets are now emulating the Dr. Atkins approach. Physicians on non MSM outlets such as utube are advocating a low carb or Keto diet as an antidote to diabetes - obesity and heart disease. This book is outstanding and well ahead of its time as it was written around 30 years ago. Anyone seeking to lose weight and become healthy without going on a spartan unfulfilling calorie controlled diet will not go wrong with this book. Very highly recommended.

Atkins New Diet Revolution
This book is well written and easily to follow. It is not a diet plan, there is no measuring, but a weight loss plan and lifestyle plan. I have changed my eating habits, got rid of cravings, feel full and satisfied, have so much more energy and after only 3 months have lost 7kgs (15lbs). Highly recommended if you want to avoid food cravings and addictions, tiredness, overweight and the risk of diabetes. I always knew I was more of a protein and vegetable person than a pasta fan but my diet consisted of so much more carbohydrate than I realized. Making this change has given a boost to my health and other HUGE revelation was how detrimental caffeine was, increasing cravings for carbohydrates resulting in a constant roller coaster. I now enjoy herbal tea and decaffeinated coffee far more. Unlike the Dukan diet this plan includes salad and vegetables right from the beginning and so feels much more normal to eat.
