Best book series
My son loves Brain quest books, I have been using since he was in Pre-K. He got better with reading comprehension and writing with this practice. He likes the gamification with stickers and completed this book before the academic year ended. He also started doing the Summer book is at near completion. I carry these books when I travel and he also likes to so them in restaurants and vacations 🙂. I wish they start another generic knowledge series which is also gamified with stickers. Kids love these books. I fully recommend them.

Good
I bought two- one 1st grade for my preschooler and one 4th grade for my second grader. I'm reviewing the 1st grade. I have a 5 year old preschooler of average intelligence. She is a bit ahead of her peers and not challenged with the preschool curriculum. She can read some, write, spell, and do some math- but the school is not working fast enough for her. The First grade book so far seems to be perfect. I tell you this, because I think you'll want to purchase at least the next grade up or it will be a bit simple. I'm not a teacher or a professional, so I don't know if simpler is better. But it's fun, she enjoys it, I like the lessons- they seem understandable and they make sense I think for a little brain.

Colorful and fun!
I bought this book to help keep my boyfriends young daughter in the habit of school work on her summer vacation between kindergarten and first grade. At first when I told her she was going to do some work when she came over she was resistant to the idea. But once she saw the book, she immediately opened it, picked a page and started working. For her, it looks fun, unlike the xeroxed copies she got at school, these pages are in full color. It seems more like a fun activity book or game to her than "schoolwork." The pictures are cute, there are lots of animals and fun scenes, sometime I see her going through the book just to look at the pictures. Like I said I bought this book to keep her in the habit of working and thinking, and this book does the trick. Much of the book is phonics and letters, which were much to easy for her, but this didn't really bother me. In fact it encouraged her because she was able to complete whole pages without having to ask for help. Now that we're getting to the part where she writes sentences, I feel it is more at her level. There is also math stuff, which they present in such a way that it seems like your playing games {Example: Which monster is taller? The picture shows two monsters standing by rulers, if your child can count and knows which numbers are greater than others, they'll find the answer.} There is also a science section, one page has the child color everything in the picture that is a plant green. The concepts are easy to understand and are fun. Some of the activities she is able to complete on her own, but needs more of an explanation from me. For example, the which monster is taller exercise required me to explain to her how we use rulers to measure different things in different ways. But that's all part of teaching, you cant expect a single book to teach everything without any guidance from you! In the back of the book, there are answers, stickers and a certificate of completion. She's already looking forward to getting the grade 2 version of the book!

There is nice use of color and pictures to make it more ...
Of all the 1st grade workbooks we have, this is probably the most basic. There is nice use of color and pictures to make it more fun to a small child and the font is large and not intimidating. The first 160 pages are all language. It starts with writing single letters to put at the beggining of each word that makes the word match its picture, then has the child sort words based in if it has soft and hard sounds for certain letters such as g and c. Then end a word correctly with b or d, m or n, t or p, ll or l, and ss or s. It has your child identify short vs long vowel sounds. Then it's fill in the blank in the sentence with the correct word from the box for many many pages. On page 112, we start writing sentences with correct capitalization and punctuation. Then there are about 8 or 9 very short stories (3 to 6 sentences each) that the kid has to pay attention to to answer basic questions about. Then there is simple sentence writing for 11 or so pages. Then a few pages of looking at related pictures and deciding the correct sequence of the event. There are many pages of simple addition and subtraction, some with pictures but some with numbers. Counting, groups of 10 and number placement, comparing numbers and deciding which is larger, some basic charts, shapes, measuring, very basic time telling, some coin counting, and a few pages of science. Overall, I'd recommend this book but it is very basic so if you want more variety, find another 1st grade book to supplement this one.

Muy completo, divertido y fácil de seguir!
Es un libro de trabajo que recomiendo mucho! Lo usan los niños nativos en USA. Pero aunque no sepas mucho ingles, detrás tienes las soluciones de los ejercicios! Hay diferentes temas de trabajo: Spelling, Reading, Language Arts, Time and Money, Social Studies, Science.

Indicação do IG @educandoeevangelizando. Super aprovado!

beautiful big pictures
short exercises, big pictures, short instructions. A variety of exercises in a surprisingly large depth of areas (social studies in grade 1, really!?).. and this is a FAT workbook. My son is very much enjoying the one-on-one time with me when we do a few exercises each night ("are we going to bed or doing some exercises first?" ... works every time!). Also, it gives me a chance to assess his abilities against a less arbitrary measurement (someone assembled "grade 1 level" material here, i have no benchmark expertise to pick out appropriately challenging tasks on my own). I have to say i'm really, really pleased. Too bad that there's only one book (and not several volumes) as i anticipate we'll be through this one in just a few months, easily. Sitting with my son to do these pages at home has helped me to know that he's got his letter sounds down (teacher thought otherwise). Also his numeracy and measurement skills are a quick win. (Again, teacher thought otherwise.) AND (to give his teacher some credit) now i know why she thought he had rocks for brains. Child does not want to sit still for anything. Doing these one on one i'm constantly bringing him back to task and reminding him of the rules/constraints for the exercise on the page. Yes he can complete and accurately too most of the time - but he is not ready to sit still. As a result, he performs poorly at school. He was not eager to start with me initially when the books arrived. However, after a few rounds he decided to try "doing some pages" without me one day - and then we could check them together. (He quickly abandoned that plan when he realized he didn't know what the instructions were for the page - he doesn't read yet.) The fact that he initiated going to the book and trying to select an exercise without me speaks volumes for his confidence and engagement. I've elected to go backwards to the kindergarten level workbook too (i figure there are some phonics basics that could help him with reading/writing). I can't say it enough - our child's teacher was not providing a suggested "do this to help" piece with her critical notes back from school, doing this HELPS.
