Winner of five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Director, and one of AFI's Top 100 Films of All Time, The Deer Hunter follows a group of Pennsylvania steelworkers from their blue-collar lives, hunting in the woods of the Alleghenies, to the hells of Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Academy Award® winners Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken star in this unforgettable saga of friendship and courage. Experience the brutality of war and the depths of emotional strain on the human spirit in this extraordinarily powerful film classic. Review: a classic that everyone should own - for old guys, we recognize this as a classic reminder of the time and perhaps a teaching item for younger generation. It is dark and grim (think Apocolypse Now). Combine this with In the Heat of the NIght, Easy Rider, and the Graduate, and you've got the basics. Just don't bogart that joint, my friends. Review: Angela: "It's such a gray day." - Bleak little hamlets like the one depicted in THE DEER HUNTER really exist. Small town life doesn't automatically mean an Andy Hardy idyll. The hellish steel mill jobs Michael (Robert De Niro) and his friends endure go far in explaining why they're all heavy drinkers. Despite outward comraderie and a jolliness induced by an alcohol buzz, these are deeply unhappy men. For them, deer hunting is more than an avocation-- it's therapeutic and necessary for their mental well-being. Michael's clashes with Stan (John Cazale) only scratch the surface of a deep, smouldering resentment, not of one man for another but of a group of contemporaries for the vagaries of chance that placed them all in a life where one has to silently suffer under the perpetual ennui that a certain miserable future guarantees. This is what stays with me most about Michael Cimino's masterpiece: the grayness of a tiny steel town, not so much in the weather but in the cradle-to-grave experience of just trying to eke out some kind of existence and find meaning for it all in such a sorry place and time. And that covers only about an hour of a 180 minute story ultimately immersed in the horrors of the Vietnam War, but it's always what stays with me most, and what leaves me feeling so melancholy whenever I watch this great film. Well worth watching.
Most movies I see are an adventure of some kind or other. This one is different. This movie is like a family dinner with that cousan that you have not see for a few years. The actors are great. There are several big named people in it. They all do the movie justice. It is a good movie although a bit low key.

One Shot is All You Need.
I like this movie since I grew up in Pennsylvania and could vicariously follow this close group of friends who worked hard, drank hard, and played hard. Just before going to Vietnam their good friend gets married in a big wedding bash, and the characters are forever cemented into your memory. During the wedding, a ceremony takes place whereby the bride and groom sip from a double cup of wine. If any of the wine is spilled, it's considered bad luck. Exactly two drops are spilled, and John Savage's character loses both legs in Vietnam. After the wedding, the group heads to a deer hunting trip, where Deniro explains the logic behind "one shot." That is all you need to kill a deer. This becomes the theme of the movie, revolving around their experiences being captured in Vietnam, were the enemy plays Russian Roulette with the captured American prisoners for money. The war leaves a huge mark on the friends, as they lose one of their own, who succumbs to a mental breakdown, possibly due to his experiences being captured by the enemy. Throughout the movie, there are subtle nuances between Deniro and Street, as they start to bootstrap a a relationship, that at times is awkward, but eventually starts moving. I won't spoil the movie, but we have themes of friendship, love, war, unbelievable mental torture, and survival, all wrapped up in the mountains of Washington state, where the deer is the symbol of honor and courage, and one's ability to let the trophy buck go, and move ahead with life. An excellent movie, at times a little long, but gets the main point across.
