8.5/10 - Fantastic remaster of a great game, and gyro controls are amazing!
Metroid Prime gets a much needed remaster that updates all visuals to 1080p/60fps, with excellent performance on both Switch 1 and 2. Maybe the single best looking and performing game on the original Switch. If playing on a Switch 2 in handheld mode, you can enable Handheld Boost mode in your system settings to get the full 1080p/60 experience in handheld mode too. The other big improvement is in the controls, where gyro aiming has been added as an option. Control schemes offer a few different choices: Classic, which uses the original GC single-stick 'tank' controls; Dual-stick, which uses a standard FPS scheme of moving with left stick and aiming with right stick; Pointer, where you move with the left stick and aim by gyro/tilt (similar to the Wii port), and Hybrid, which works like Classic but lets you toggle gyro aim when holding R1/R2. Dual-stick mode works well, but the gyro aiming is amazing for fine control over aiming, so I recommend using Hybrid. Turn towards enemies, make small adjustments with gyro, then lock on and fire. The gyro controls work best for small movements and Pointer mode felt like a downgrade compared to the Wii pointer mode. The biggest negative is that you can't fully remap the controls and mix and match Dual-Stick and Hybrid modes; I would have loved to use Dual Stick with hybrid gyro aim instead of Classic single-stick movement. The other negative for the game overall is that there are very few changes in terms of QoL improvements or new features. At a minimum, having the option to do a quick save/resume would have been very useful, because sometimes there are long stretches between save rooms that are not ideal for handheld play on the go. Setting those minor issues aside, it is one of the best remasters Nintendo has published, and goes much further than other recent remasters like Paper Mario TTYD, Super Mario Galaxy, or Donkey Kong Country Returns HD to polish visuals and gameplay. If you have never played a Metroid Prime game and want to try the series, this is probably the best place to start.
