Good, sometimes quirky "warnings"
My son is getting to the age where he's increasingly with his friends on many of our weekly Friday chess nights...but I still want to play! So, whenever that happens, I can now break out this set and still get in a game or two solo. Sad in a way, but times change I guess. If you're used to playing on a regular sized chess board, you'll first notice that both the board and the pieces are smaller than what you might be used to. The "large screen" advertised is also not-so-large, though I have pretty good eyesight and have no difficulty seeing the LCD screen. All squares on the board are labeled, so you don't have to know A-H / 1-8 by heart, which is great for beginners. I still need to re-read the instructions, because sometimes it will give me a warning (I'd like to turn this feature OFF due to what I'm about to describe) when I *intend* to make the move. For example, I'll go to push a pawn up to defend against an isolated pawn that is under attack from computer's knight, but it will warn me repeatedly that the isolated pawn is at risk from the knight. OK, I get it computer, but if you want to capture my pawn in exchange for me capturing your knight, I'll take that trade all day long. You don't have to repeatedly warn me. It's quirky at times. Overall, this is a good way for me to still play on a Friday night, considering my son sometimes abandons me, my daughter is too young, and my wife couldn't care less about playing chess. It has several skill levels to choose from that seem appropriate in terms of correlating difficulty levels (I consider myself somewhere in the middle to getting into the upper skill levels), and overall, despite sometimes odd behavior (again, I will learn how to turn these features off), a good set to have!

Very small playing surface.
I was vasillating between a 3 and a 4. The item is advertised as 13x8". But the playing field is only 7"x 7". This was disappointing. Otherwise, you get what you pay for. A larger playing field would cost hundreds. This unit does the job.

A bit small but good for learning how to play chess
I wanted to love this electronic chess board, but I ended up only sort of liking it. Here are my thoughts on this chess board: - The computer player is perfectly fine for me (an average player). I like that I can adjust the difficulty level. There are some times when the computer takes about 20 seconds to think about the move to make. - This is a small chess board. The pieces are smaller and can be a bit frustrating when trying to get all the magnets to line up and register on the chess board. - Each chess piece has simple magnets underneath them. The computer keeps track of which piece is which on the electronic board based off of previous/current positioning. This means that if you lose a piece, you can just make a new one with a simple magnet. You can even make a custom chess board with Warhammer figurines! - The volume is loud/shrill and cannot be adjusted. It is either on or off. - The electronic menu is a bit clunky and not intuitive to navigate. The instruction manual provided is sufficient to figure it out eventually though. - I wish there was a little compartment to store the chess pieces with the chess board. You get a little cloth bag to store them instead. It would make it better for storage and travel if it all fit into one unit. (without having to keep the original box).

Decent chess set to learn the game
This chess set was purchased to help my wife and daughter learn the game. The pieces are magnetic, but the chess board doesn't actually recognize what piece is placed on the board. When you first start playing a game, you will need to match the chess pieces to their specific positions on the board. Then, as you move the pieces, the chess board will track the piece's movement. The magnets for the pieces are not very strong and will slide if you tilt the board. Different difficulty levels can be set, and it even has "fun" levels for beginner players. As you are playing, it will warn you if you're making a bad move. The voice volume is pretty loud; unfortunately, there's no way to adjust it. My only other negative is that the board and chess pieces are small. It works well for my daughter, but adults might find it a little too small. However, the size makes it easy to carry when traveling.

I found it really good with one exception. The chessboard was a little smaller then I wanted, but it will do me once I get used to it.

Too small, too flimsy, screen hardly visible, chess pieces very small and weak magnet so they don’t stay in place. Surely they could have done a better job even at a relatively low price.
