Compact, easy to use, quality pictures - good value for money

Had same CANON IXUS camera since 2005. Love that it is idiot proof and so easy to use. New i phones take super pics and everyone now stopped usung tiny extremely good wee cameras. I am a technophobe and hate iphones..far to complicated. Love my CANON IXUS. This is a spare..just incase!

This review is for a Canon IXUS 185 digital camera. It arrived boxed. In the box was the camera, a battery, a battery charger and a cable. The camera is very compact and lightweight. You can take regular photos, and videos. The quality of both is good. I didn't have a lot of luck getting glare-free photos with the flash enabled, but with good lighting the photos were not grainy without the flash. It has a good zoom, it goes up to 8x optical which allows for good long distance photos. But when it comes to macro pictures I struggled to get it to focus on things. While you can connect this camera to a PC (via a well hidden old style mini USB port on the side) you can't use it as a webcam. At least, I couldn't figure out a way. It only showed static images when I attached it directly to a monitor (via a mini HDMI port, also hidden next to the USB), and the quality was frankly awful. You can see them better on the built-in display. The price of this camera is too high for what it is. I have had cameras with similar functionality and quality in the past which I bought for around half the price of this one. I feel kind of ripped off having bought this camera. You can find much better else where, at a better price too. The only thing this really has going for it is its compact size and optical zoom.

My Nikon camera gave up the ghost & so I researched a replacement and found that the Canon IXUS 285 HS Compact camera fitted the bill. Best for value, zoom, size etc. Since receiving it it has lived up to expectations. Happy customer.

The camera was delivered by Royal Mail in a plastic bag giving details of how to claim compensation. It was in a real mess. The cardboard box was badly damaged and soaking wet. Inside the actual Canon box was damaged and everything was wet. Clearly Royal Mail were at fault here, but the camera should have been better packaged. Just putting it unprotected in a cardboard box may be fine for robust low value items, but expensive electronic equipment requires better care. Happily, the camera itself survived in some bubble wrap and appears undamaged, and despite the bad start I'm very pleased with it. It appears well made, and the optical zoom is very impressive. Only negative for me is the lack of view finder which makes it more 'point and hope' at times than 'point and shoot', but on a camera this size I expect there has to be compromises.

DO NOT BUY - THEY SEND THE JAPANESE MODEL AND IT IS DEFECTIVE AND DOESNT TURN ON. THE SCREEN AND INSTRUCTIONS ARE ALL IN JAPANESE AND THE CHARGER IS A JAPANESE PLUG.

This is the 3rd version of this type of cannon camera I have owned and they are excellent. I still have the original one I bought and it must be 15 years old, so the resolution means I don't use it anymore. These latest versions produce really sharp excellent pictures. The camera is robust and small enough to pop in a pocket.

J'ai collectionné les Powershot Canon, à chaque fois l'écran amovible merdait. > Là point d'écran amovible, un écran fixe. Sinon les performances sont les mêmes. 20 mégapixels, donc très bonne précision encore en 2025. La possibilité de faire des photos en 16/9 3/4 2/3 1/1, en faisant un réglage sur l'appareil. Le rendu est à l'écran en direct. On peut faire des films en 16/9. Différents pré-programmes comme la vision de nuit, les couleurs éclatantes, etc. On peut une fois les photos prises les retourner dans 4 sens à partir de l'appareil ; les effacer également ; etc. Un seul bémol : les touches perdent de leur sensibilité avec le temps, pour les réglages c'est énervant.
