Can this used to test bath water?

Since it will register up to 120 degrees and is advertised for hot tubs, spas and pools, I’m guessing that it would be right for the job. I use it in my heated swimming pool and it works great!

how long does it take to get an accurate reading

As long as it takes to pull the thermometer out of the water and read it.

Can the top be taken off so it sinks? I'd like to tie it to the ladder and get the temp reading deeper.

Yes. The top provides buoyancy and press-fits onto the thermometer. Separating them and the thermometer sinks like rock. To add a line you will need an eye fastened to the thermometer, or as you indicate "tie it to the ladder". No problem.

Every one I've purchased lasts only a few months. The thermometer comes loose from the backing making it useless. Anyone have this experience?

I have not had an issue with mine. I have had it for 5 months. It is in my koi pond. Not sure if a chlorinated pool would cause this.
