What's preventing you from teaching ancient Greek in your homeschool or learning it on your own? If you're intimidated because you've never studied ancient Greek, bewildered by traditional Greek books that move too fast, or just don't know where to begin, then Getting Started with Ancient Greek is for you! Specifically designed to overcome these types of obstacles, Getting Started with Ancient Greek is divided into simple lessons that explain the fundamentals of ancient Greek grammar in a way that anyone can grasp. Instead of burying you in mountains of information to memorize, new words and concepts are introduced in a gradual and systematic way. You can immediately apply what you've learned by translating the fun exercises at the end of each lesson. To hear the words pronounced, listen to the free audio recordings available from www.GettingStartedWithAncientGreek.com. Quickly check your work by turning to the included answer key. With everything you need here in one book, why aren't you Getting Started with Ancient Greek? Review: Gentle and engaging introduction to a complicated subject - I am a self-taught student and not experienced with the ancient Greek language by any means: this textbook is my first interaction with the language. It is an introductory textbook, designed to give one the most basic groundwork to begin learning the language. Greek has a reputation for being a very complicated and difficult language, but I have found this book to be written engagingly and paced gently to provide an easy introduction. In particular, concepts which are merely presented as a table to memorize in other books I've looked at are explained and worked through a step at a time in this one, and I found that the author strikes a good balance between not overwhelming me but giving me enough foundational context to build on as I continue my studies. I recently completed this textbook, and have begun to transition into a more comprehensive beginner's textbook, and found myself well-prepared for it. Consequently, I highly recommend this book as a preparatory course prior to starting a full study of the language. Review: wonderful introduction to Ancient Greek - This is a great intro to Ancient Greek ! I wish the author would continue its method to the next level!

Highly recommended
This is the perfect book for the self-directed learner who has had a yearning (but perhaps not the time) to learn Ancient Greek language. Having studied Classics in college I always aspired to learn Ancient Greek but did not have the time to do so. Now, semi-retired I have the time and still have the desire to learn Ancient Greek. Linney's book takes you step by step in an understandable and enjoyable manner to grasp the basics of Ancient Greek, starting with the Greek alpha bet and pronunciations, accents etc. My goal: side by side reading of Homer's Odyssey in English and Ancient Greek, stanza by stanza. Getting Started in Ancient Greek is a firm 'stepping-stone' to achieving that goal.

Good for elementary/middle-school students, too simplistic for older students.
Good VERY BASIC introduction to the language. This is clearly for home-schoolers and for use by people who apparently have little background in linguistics or foreign languages. For that purpose, it's great, but the scope of the book is quite limited. In my opinion, too much time is spent on introducing the alphabet and thus too little time on grammar and vocabulary. I bought this as a gift for someone who mentioned wanting the book, and the recipient was equally disappointed with the scope of the book. Again, this is a workable INTRODUCTION, but very limited in scope. This would be best for younger kids, not for adults.

Best Language program for the least investment.
I am using this program to teach my 11 year old. We love how straight forward and clear the instructions are. Each lesson introduced a new word ( or Greek letter) and provides 10 practice sentences. All the answers are in the back of the book. You can also download an app with more practice and review options. You can also visit his website and listen as he reads the lesson to you, and pronounced the practice sentences. Best Language program I have ever used in my 20 years of homeschooling. Very affordable and provides quick confidence building.

At last a real book for people without teachers
This wonderful book provides: *an answer key (so useful when we study alone!) *many explanations that others books skip, like the breathing mark and accent (also the script used is big enough as we don't need a magnifying glass to see them!) * a file for listening the pronunciation (free). It is also full of tips and tricks very useful to learn efficiently. It could be used with adults as well as children (explanation of the basic of english grammar). I've begun with another method, so I'm not a real beginner, but I really appreciate this book and I started at the beginning and have learned new information. I must add that if the book seems simplist at first glance, well used it allows lot of learning method: I use the answer key in reverse and use the audio to write what I hear. Using the book and audio like that, I'm often astonished to discover that I've not learned as much as I believed! It provides a very solid base to continue after that! Excellent book, hotly recommanded!

Recommended for absolute beginners
This is a good introduction to Ancient Greek basics, starting from how to read alphabet, pronunciation and basic grammar. Book is written in a style and language that is suitable even to children. If english language is your second language and you don't want to be dropped in the deep waters of english grammar this book goes over the most basic grammar rules of english and how it relates to Ancient Greek. This book has free audio recordings that can be helpful for absolute beginners too. I think this book will help me to dive into more "classical" Ancient Greek learning textbooks. So if you want to ease your way into the language before more serious books this is the way to go. With intensive study you can finish this book in one week!

Great introductory course
I have used other 'Getting started' courses before and have always found them to be of the utmost importance before I jump into a traditional more heavy course with my target language. This Greek course didn't dissapoint and was great for getting me through the early confusions and overwhelmingess of such a rich complex language, I highly reccomend as a starter course if you're new to ancient Greek.

Great Introduction to Ancient Greek! (but see comments about Pronunciation)
Short Review: Great introduction to Ancient Greek; ideal for beginners; fun and easy to use; pronunciation not perfect but suitable for the purpose of the book. Could have been 5* with more nuanced speakers and larger vocabulary. Extended Review: Armfield Press have created a wonderul series of books: easy and engaging. I personally own the French, German, Latin, and now this Greek edition and I'm really excited for possible future books on Russian and Italian. The modern language books had native (or near native) speakers on the excellent audio recordings - a must for my own language learning. Obviously, there were no native speakers available for the Latin and Ancient Greek editions but there are exceptionally good speakers of Latin and Ancient Greek out there (see youtube). I suggest that if you are serious about your Latin and Greek, then you do your own research into pronunciation and find suitable models on Youtube.
