I purchased this item to replace an identical tester I had for several years that had finally failed. This is such a great tool to have for safety if you plan on working with electrical items in your home. The last tester I had failed from the batteries leaking when stored and ruining the electronics inside. I dont plan to store my new unit with the batteries installed like my last tester for obvious reasons. This replacement tester is as equally effective as my last and I won't work on electrical projects without it. I've changed several ceiling fans, outlets, and light switches within my home. Sure its relstively easy to tell if a breaker is off by other means but don't you want to know for sure? A back up way to know your not going to get electrocuted? Not only can you plug this into the hot side of an outlet but you can just touch hot wires with the tip to see if there is power. You get an audible beep and an internal visual led that lights up the entire front casing red when a wire is hot. There is also a while led "flashlight" option which comes in handy when you kill the breaker and have no light in a particular area. It responds very quickly with no real delay when it touches power. I would say it is very sensitive and very accurate. The size is great, it can fit in your pocket or easily be stored in your electrical work box or case. But it's not so small that it's easy to misplace or lose. For the price it is a great piece of mind. I highly recommend this tester!

Pros: super easy to use. No on/off button. It’s always in standby. Wave the device near a live wire or into the wall outlet and it goes off. Very affordable for the quality.Flashlight is cool but haven’t had to use it for reals during any viltage detection troubleshooting.Cons: too sensitive. I wish it wasn’t as strong to lick up voltage detection. This is due to having multiple wires in the same area. I could be picking up erroneous voltage detection on the wire I’m trying to detect power on.The PEIZO is way too loud it’s obnoxious to others in the same room. I took my detector apart and stuffed cut up foam earplugs to dampen the peizoOverall it’s a great buy. I recommend.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my 10 year old great-nephew. You know who his father is?My nephew. You know who was a little pain and annoyed me when he was a kid? Yep, that nephew. The lad loved this thing. I showed it to him and he ran around my sister's house, the lad's grandma, holding it up to the light switches and wall sockets and it was going, Beep-beep-beep, half the night. I showed him how it worked on many of the walls that had wires in them. Now that is educational for a kid to learn. My nephew sneered,"That's a nice present", sarcastically. I told him it was his karma and payback. He owns a bakery and I mentioned that he could probably borrow it and use it there now and then. He admitted that, yes, he could, more often than he liked. More creative than a drumset. Get one for your grandchild, nephew, or you friend's kid. Their parents will thank you. Very affordable.

I bought this to test which wire in my triple strand Christmas lights was out. I can't separate the wires far enough apart without this thing picking up the working wires. It senses the electricity from 4-6" away. So yeah, it works but I can't use it. It needs an adjustment to turn down the sensitivity.

works well, does detect voltages so it is just good to have when working around ac and even dc projects that might have live hot wires.
