there are no hooks/clasps, how do you secure it around a yoga mat?

There are two metal rectanguar rings that the straps go through that allow you to cinch the mat when it is rolled up.

I see that the strap cinches when being carried. Will the carrier open when left on the ground?

No it doesn’t open when placed on the ground/floor. You have to physically loosen the strap to remove the mat. Enjoy!

does it have an adjustment to change the shoulder strap length to control slack variance generated by different size items and chest sizes?

Yes, it cinches around whatever size item you may have. However, there is no further adjustment for the part of the strap that goes over your shoulder.
