An Indispensable Tool for LF Film Digitizing
I collect vintage 4x5 slides that used to be distributed for PR purposes by TV companies 30+ years ago. Since they are often faded, I try to restore them to their old glory by scanning them with my 42 MP Sony camera. That's much more affordable for me compared to the rates professional labs would charge for hi-res scans.I recently purchased Vlads Test Target to work on my camera scanning project, and I must say, it has been a game-changer! The 4x5 test targets are made with high-contrast Agfa Gevaert film and exhibit very high edge sharpness. The uniformity of the image is mind-boggling; I don't quite understand how this target is produced, being equally sharp at the center and at the edges. The uniform and absolutely ordered raster covering the entire working surface helps to spot any soft focus or lens aberations.Being well versed in film photography, I was specifically looking to scan transparencies as a 4x4 matrix, and then stitch them together to create high-resolution images. Vlads Test Target made this process incredibly efficient and accurate. I rehearse the scanning sequence and focusing with the test target up to the point where I stitched my images. With my Sony camera, I am getting something like a 140 MP stitched image, which is good for anything up to a billboard on Times Square. The Siemens stars were another highlight for me. Aligning the film plane with the camera sensor became a breeze, especially when combined with my camera's "focus peaking" function. This made the initial scanning setup quick and easy, allowing me to concentrate on the other aspects of my project. What I particularly appreciated about Vlads Test Target was its adaptability to different scanning methods. I use it not only for camera scanning but also in my darkroom with my 4x5 enlarger, ensuring that I am getting sharp images across the field. Whether you're stitching slides or working in a darkroom, the precision and quality of this tool will undoubtedly enhance your workflow. Highly recommended!

Superb!
I bought the 4x5 and 120 targets. They are superb! Years ago, a friend and I build camera scanners that use an Arduino, stopper motors, liners slides.....to take pictures at 1x magnification of negatives. We called our system 'Scanduino'. It was take 25 photos of a 4x5 negative....Anyway, back then there were very little options for test slides. I bought a high-res 1951 chrome-on-glass target from Edmunds. It was expensive! And it only had a target in the middle of the slide. Vlad's targets are much better, have a great pattern of targets throughout the film. Currently, I have a scanner that holds a Nikon Z9. I tether with HDMI to a TV. Together with Vlad's targest, this allows me to quickly and easily align the system, and it'll also make it very easy to find the best aperture and to compare lenses. On top of all of that, the targets are affordable! If you're using a camera to scan film, Vlad's targets are extremely helpful!
