Dreaded warrior Manji (Takuya Kimura) failed to protect his younger sister Machi (Hana Sugisaka) from a pack of rivals... and as he lay dying after taking his vengeance, he was cursed with regenerative powers and immortality. Half a century later, all he sought was redemption and eternal rest, and believed he might find both in aiding an orphaned girl (also Sugisaka)-the image of Machi-in gaining revenge on her family's killers. Takashi Miike's electric adaptation of the popular manga co-stars Sôta Fukushi, Hayato Ichihara. 140 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: Japanese; Subtitles: English. In Japanese with English subtitles. Review: Q: What happens if you're not the most awesome warrior but you're immortal? - A: Watch this and find out. This movie was good but it did not quite compare to some of the awesome action both martial and swordplay we see in other films both past and present. However, I am giving it 5* for 2 main reasons. Firstly, it is different and it executes well. The combats are all different, showing a bunch of different styles, enemies and weapons. They don't overdo "magic" (beyond the 'obvious' main story) tho you get the feeling it's there, which is how I prefer it, it makes it *feel* more historically possible even if it's not. Secondly, the current rating is 4.5* which I think is accurate. Usually I will not bother to review movies with ratings I agree with but every once in a while a movie is good enough I am motivated to vote it higher so it has more a chance to retain that rating. This is the latter. The acting is also very good, I felt for the characters even many of the bad guys and both of the younglings. There's some minor twisting as well which keeps you interested until the end, and probably room for a sequel. Review: 15+ years of story minus about 10 years squeezed into a 2.5 hour movie. - A very admirable and earnest adaptation of an incredible manga. I started reading the manga when it was first published as a full-size comic book by Dark Horse around 1996 all the way til it's end run a few years ago. I always thought a live-action adaptation would be impossible due to the ultra-violence, complexity of characters and, ofcourse, the sheer length. I guess i shouldn't be surprised that the legendary Takashi Miike would find a way to adapt it. I won't get too into the story and what/who was cut out because it's pointless to talk about in an adaptation like this. The important thing is that it got the point across. Overall, i found the movie very good. The costumes and weapons are spot on perfect. Most of the casting looks just like the manga (in particular Shira, Anotsu, and Magatsu) and the fight choreography is accurate right down to the story panels and the characters' classic poses and mannerisms. Manji didn't quite look like i imagined him but his portrayal was excellent. He had ALL the same mannerisms and even struck the same iconic poses throughout the movie. The attention to detail and being faithful to the characters was very much appreciated. Although this is a very bloody and violent movie, it still does not reach the sheer artistic and beautiful bloodbath of the manga. i guess trying to replicate crazy splash page death scenes w/ CGI would look awful so for that i am very thankful. Highly recommended to any chanbara fans. You will probably enjoy it more if you have never read the manga before. Now if only someone would do a true faithful adaptation as a 4-5 season series...

Visually riveting
Five stars. I came upon this movie by accident while I was looking for something interesting to watch. This is an unusual long movie. I do not know anything about the backstory or where the characters came from but it held my interest from the first 15 seconds of action and kept me interested for the remainder of the time. This is a cleverly written and shot film. Not particularly a movie for those that don’t think or appreciate art in cinema. Even for action film folks this is a really got a lot of action. But for those that do like something different you can immerse yourself into this film. It reminded me of the Akira Kurosawa films. Not a copy by any stretch it’s different but cut of the same bolt of cloth. Visually it’s pretty gory and a lot of sword stuff. But the storyline was unusual and the actors were fantastic. The writing was full of unpredictable twists. The direction was really intricate. The photography was balanced throughout the whole film. The rustic scenery set and locations were created/selected with a high production and storyline value. The music score was almost invisible but played a tremendous part in emphasizing the critical shots. This is a movie to get lost in for 2 1/2 hours.

This turned out to be quite a production.
I was unprepared for what i got... I think I was idly looking at Samurai titles and the cover caught my eye. Due to the virus I've had alot of time so i bought it. It turns out this EPIC production is the 100th film of some guy named Takashi Miike. Never having heard of this director i was unimpressed. After watching this movie I will have to go find his other 99. The whole movie was well done. Awesome camera angles and action sequences. This movie skipped alot of the ordinary pitfalls. In fact my only complaint is that while he may kill 300 guys he does it one at a time. Ok onto what you really need to know. This is a two disc offering with good audio and no skips or jumps. Disc one has the movie and its offered in alot of language selections. Special Features include: Manji vs 300, Photo Gallery and Trailers. Disc 2 [which I have not looked at yet] Contains several cast interviews. This was well worth my time and money.

Blade of the Immortal is an entirely fantastic film: well calibrated, cheecky and never too gory, it entertains to the fullest. Cult director Takashi Miike might have got some stick for wanting to cast Takuya Kimura as Manji, the outcast samurai cursed with immortality, but his choice was spot on. Miike rightly considered how very lonely the life of a true superstar must be: both Takuya and Manji cannot enjoy normal social interactions and must deal with their unique status (a blessing or a curse?) entirely on their own. In the end the 45-year-old mainstream idol effortlessly succeeds in demonstrating to a different, more demanding, type of audience that he is a seriously talented and charismatic actor. With his now middle-aged man good looks ravaged by an unforgiving make-up, Kimura-san, who was already very engaging in his portrayal of legendary master Miyamoto Musashi in the excellent Japanese dorama three years earlier, here ups his performance by a few notches. In the special features he is seen teaching sword techniques and timings to his co-stars, while Miike stands on one side looking quite smug, himself taken by Kimura's skills and professional dedication. Accustomed to act with the intensity of his famously large eyes, as well the captivating quirkiness of his facial expressions, Kimura took on the challenge to portray someone with one eye and a badly scarred face by expressing the character tormented soul through down-to-earth, measured gestures, revealing how, beneath the coarseness of a killer, a desire for love and redemption needs to be quenched at all cost.

I’ve never read or seen any of the manga series that’s related to this short version of two hours an twenty min. cause to make the full length would be impossible. these actors would be dead in a week the fighting is paramount to say the least. this is set in Japan during the mid-Tokugawa Shogunate period and it follows the cursed samurai Manji who has to kill 1000 evil men in order to regain his mortality after his criminal actions led to the death of 100 other samurai including his sister’s husband. this quest was carried out by an 800-year old-nun named Yaobikuni and is compelled by the death of his sister to accept the quest that will end his agelessness. so much hundreds of hours was the focus of this manga that splicing this movie to suit any kind of semblance was tuff for Takashi Miike” and he pulled it off with flying colors I would say.. but word of warning this is the bloodiest samurai movie I’ve ever ever seen in my life so if you’re not on that page stay away from it. and to top this off the English dub is fantastic. “Blade of the Immortal” is bloody good. its okay you say its dam good. 1000 Immortal Souls Can’t Be Wrong.. Japanese with English Dub an Subtitles 5.1 DTS-HD Runtime 142 Min. Widescreen 2.39:1
