ABRAHADABRA

I bought DCA back in 2003, and never thought to see if Dimmu Borgir had any other albums because I was so obsessed with that one! The just before Christmas I searched on Amazon and found Abrahadabra as being their most recent offering. I listened to the segments of the songs and knew it would be another great album, and I wasn't wrong. The orchestra, again, sounds great along with the metal guitars and drums. It's like the soundtrack to a film, I am playing it over and over at the moment as I can't get enough of it! The only disappointing thing is that I bought the 'standard' album rather than the deluxe edition and I since found out there are bonus tracks on the deluxe edition. Schoolboy error!

First of all I loved this edition, very nice box that comes with a small book and very nice cross digipak. The album is also very good. The melodies and symphonic arrangements are very amazing and everything else too, except that I really miss ICS Vortex, he used to add something special to their songs with his magical voice. Overall the album is very good and the box set is amazing.

what a band black metal love it

This album blew me away. I don't think of myself as a black metal fan and therefore, I am not a purist when it comes to this type of music. To be honest this is the first Dimmu Borgir album I could actually listen to from start to finish.I find the constant growling and grunting a bit off-putting at times that's why I am always flirting with subgenres of black metal: pagan black metal, symphonic black metal, ambient black metal etc. Maybe this is why I like this record so much. The use of the orchestra and the choir is absolutely mesmerisisng: you can listen to a track ten times and still discover different layers of orchestration. This however, does not drown the band sound: there is an amazing balance between the two which was only hinted at in their previous album. Dimmu Borgir are the true masters of the symphonic metal sound, breezing past Epica and leaving Within Temptation way behind. And let's not even consider bringing the new Nightwish in this debate. Gateways is beautiful and magestic and Dimmu Borgir could easily be the soundtrack of a Lord of the Rings battle scene. This album is relentless and demands your full attention and repeated listenings to be appreciated fully. The lyrics have a more positive and optimistic feel than your usual black metal songs;I find it a welcome change and it fits the whole turning point that Dimmu Borgir are at the moment. The whole album has an unusual uplifting feel about it. Again, fans of the genre won't be happy with this. A lot of purists will hate me for mentioning Dimmu and Nightwish in the same review; I dont care, I don't believe in genre boundaries. Buy this, if you can keep an open mind.

I'm never disappointed with albums from Dimmu Borgir !

Boyfriend loved it defiantly a worthwhile gift I have also stolen it a few times best thing is he plays it at work.

If yoi as me you cannot get better than this when it comes to the good heavy dark stuff pity the bassist who used to do some vocals on thier other stuff is gone but its none the worse for that, one of the best tracks is bimmu borgir there is just something that really makes me take notice there is just that thing that does something to you that you cannot put your finger on but it hits the spot if you get me anyway all I can say is just buy this album if your into the real good stuff you will like this.

I first came across Dimmu Borgir in the Trondheim rock museum in mid Norway, a celebration of Black Metal crowned them as a massive musical export that demanded my attention. I chose this as my entry point for them and have not stopped playing it since. It reminds me of Metallica's strings and metal album in some ways, hugely Wagnerian, dramatic, but also reminds me of Bathory and Manowar for the grandiosity of the tracks contained within its make up. Style wise, it's as you'd expect, gruff growling demonically sourced rock, but the one thing that gets me is the musicality of it all. It's not just a blitz of double bass drums and detuned guitars, there are tunes here, classically originated and delivered with a sheen that makes this listenable for most people. I am now waiting for the concept album that surely must follow, because whilst this band obviously doffs a cap towards the usual peers of Slayer, Venom and others, for me there are elements of King Crimson in here too, albeit turned to 11. Marvellous, although I should say that the sheer power of this record got me a speeding ticket today through some super charged accelerator pedal action.

Preso e ascoltato subito. Le canzoni sono molto belle e ben fatte. La custodia è bellissima e anche i libretti con il libretto porta cd e per le canzoni insomma è davvero un buon lavoro. Lo consiglio :)

Tengo 2 discos de Dimmu Borgir: "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" y "Death Cult Armageddon" y este me parece con diferencia el más trabajado en cuestión de melodías y a nivel de producción . Todas las canciones enganchan y la orquesta y los coros son perfectos para fusionarse con la velocidad y contundencia de la música de Dimmu Borgir. Me parece un disco de 10. La edición es muy buena, con un libreto con muchas fotos y un diseño muy atractivo. De las mejores compras que he hecho últimamente.

Je tiens tout d'abord à dire que je ne suis pas un "die hard" du black métal en général mais que Dimmu Borgir fait parti de ces groupes qui me fascinent par leur musique .Ce savant mélange de fureur cataclysmique et de passages symphonique , d'ambiances malsaines et inquiétantes apporte vraiment une profondeur dans la musique du groupe , une certaine grandiloquence à ce monde ténébreux digne de l'enfer de Dante . Dimmu Borgir est un groupe qui semble évoluer vers une musique plus grand public que par le passé mais dieu que c'est bon et ce tout dernier opus des ténébreux Norvégiens m'a enthousiasmé à tout point de vue même si le départ de 2 membres laissait quelques interrogations sur la suite !! Dès "Xibir" , l'intro , le décor est planté , nous laissant entrevoir les infernaux mondes du dessous !! Le groupe nous sert une musique complexe et grandiose tout au long de l'album entrecoupée de multiples changements de rythme de breaks inquiétants , de choeurs symphonique magistraux ( l'intro de Chess with the Abyss superbe) . Jamais la musique n'a été autant fouillée et la production est époustouflante ,le son est une tuerie ! Bien sûr cet album peut décevoir les plus irréductibles des Black métalleux qui le trouveront peut être trop propre , trop symphonique peut être et comme je l'ai dit plus haut , plus abordable mais quelle richesse musicale , quelle profondeur par l'apport de cet ensemble symphonique !!Je vous laisse seuls juges mais moi , je suis enthousiasmé , conquis , j'adore !!!

Mit neuen Dimmu Borgir-Alben ist es ja immer so eine Sache, schaut man in Internetforen sieht es so als wolle niemand es haben und doch sind Dimmu Borgir mit ihren Alben in den Charts vertreten und mit jedem Album weiter an der Spitze. Fast vier Jahre hat es seit "In Sorte Diaboli" gedauert bis das neue Album heute erschienen ist. Insgesamt 11 Monate haben Shagrath, Silenoz und Galder, nachdem Rauswurf von Vortex (Bassist/Clean Vocals) und Mustis (Keyboard), gebraucht, um das Album fertig zu stellen. " Abrahadabra " heißt das Werk und ist seit "Stormblast", der erste Albumtitel, der nur aus einem Wort besteht. Beiteiligt waren neben den 3en, die sich neuerdings als "fixer kreativer Kern" von Dimmu Borgir bezeichnen, noch etwa 101 Gastmusiker, hauptsächlich das norwegische Radio-Orchester und einem 38-köpfigen Chor. Der Chor ist zugleich eine der Neuerungen im Sound, dazu später mehr. Zudem darf Agnete Maria Forfang Kjølsruds in dem Lied Gateways und Endings and Continuations ihre außergewöhnliche Stimme einsetzten, wo wir auch gleich bei der zweiten Neuerung sind. Snowy Shaw, bekannt aus Therion, darf hier ein auf dem Album Bass spielen und 1-2 seine Stimme einsetzen. Aufgenommen wurde in verschiedenen Studios, gemixt von Andy Sneap. Soviel zu den Rahmenbedingungen. Aufmachung: Habe mich für die normale CD-Version entscheiden, da ich den Mehrwert in der Deluxe-Box nicht wirklich erkennen konnte und mir die NB-Limited Edition mit dem hässlichen Wandschmuck einfach zu teuer war. Das Cover ist von Joachim Luetke, der auch schon für das Cover vom Kreator Album "Hordes of Chaos" zuständig war, was man dem Cover auch ziemlich ansieht. Finde es nicht so aussagekräftig und eigentlich recht langweilig. Die Farbgebung ist wie beim DCA-Album gelungen, düster und kalt. Im Booklet sind alle Text gut lesbar(!) abgebildet. Die kleinen Bildchen daneben sind meist nicht aufregend, mal ein bisschen Stacheldraht, ein Wolf.. nichts aufregendes. Was schon ein bisschen für Aufregung gesorgt hat sind wohl die neuen Klamotten der Band, ganz in weiß, aber trotzdem noch einen düsteren Look vermittelnd, auch zu sehen im Video zu "Gateways", ebenfalls auf der CD. Texte: Lyrisch gesehen folgt dieses Album, wie eigentliche alle Alben, möchte ich sagen, dem Grundsatz "Do as thou wilt", also prinzipiell um die Formung eines freien Willens. Textzeilen wie " the core principle of freedom is the only notion to obey" oder " be the broken or the breaker, be the giver or the undertaker" aus Gateways gehen deutlich in die Richtung. Wie der Albumtitel auch schon andeutet geht es aber auch um Reinkarnation und andere okkulte Themen inspiriert von Aleister Crowley. Gut zu erkennen auch am Songtitel "Endings and Continuations" Ob man das jetzt gut oder interessant findet muss man für sich selbst entscheiden. Musik: 1. Xibir Das Intro fällt sehr orchestral und Chor-lastig aus. Es ist atmosphärisch, natürlich düster und ein guter Einklang. Meiner Meinung hält es gut mit dem Intro der PEM-Scheibe mit. "Fear and Wonder" von PEM und Xibir sind sich auf jeden Fall ebenwürtig. Ich wage zu behaupten, man hört ein Digeridoo. Das Intro wird zum Ende hin etwas ruhiger was einen guten Übergang zu 2. Born Treacherous bildet, welches mit einem einfachen Riff beginnt, bevor Shagrath ENDLICH mal wieder naturbelassen keift. Zu Beginn noch etwas mid-tempolastig wird nach dem tollen Break bestehend aus einem tollen Gitarren-Lead und großem Orchester, steigert sich das Lied in seiner Geschwindigkeit, die der Song behält, nur im nächsten Break das einfache Anfangs-Riff zu wiederholen, ABER groß unterlegt mit Orchester wodurch es eine ganz andere Note bekommt. Die Chören singen bombastisch den Songtitel, bevor es im Mittelteil eine kurzes mystisches Intermezzo inkl. Sprach-Sample gibt, nachdem sich der Songs in Finale steigert. Ein typischer Dimmu Borgir-Song möchte ich sagen, ganz bewusst als eigentlicher Opener gesetzt. Das Schlagzeug, welches wirklich gut klingt,wird abwechslungsreich und schnell gespielt. Die Gitarren spielen nicht mehr wie auf In Sorte Diaboli eher 80s Heavy Metal sonder wieder schnelle Black-Metal Riffs, mit dem typischen frostigen klirrenden Sound. Überhaupt kann man schon mal vorweg nehmen, dass das Album sehr organisch und natürlich klingt. Nur selten greift Shagrath auf seine, meiner Meinung nach, nervige Robot-Indsturial Voice zurück. Auch das versprochene Gitarren-Orientierte Schreiben wird trotz des wirklich großen Orchester eingehalten, denn nie werden oder eher kaum werden die Gitarren vom Orchester zerdrückt, sondern passen sich bei rythmus-Passagen toll an und halten sich bei Soli gekonnt zurück. 3. Gateways Gateways war als Single schon vorab bekannt und hat sogar ein Musikvideo spendiert gekriegt. Warum ist für mich fraglich, da es für mich das Abstand schwächste Lied ist. Beginnend mit Chören, Kettenrasseln und einem Sound wie von einem Elektro-Rasierer wird das Lied sehr bombastisch mit viel Chor und Orchester eröffnet. Durchgehender Double-Base sind hier an der Tagesordnung. Der wohl symphonischste Song, aber auch simpelste Song, kann mich allerdings nicht wirklich packen. Simpel ja, weil Single, aber oder gerade deswegen langweilig. Etwas aufgewertet wird er duch den weiblichen Gesang von Agnete, der ungewohnt im Dimmu Borgir ist. Allerdings singt sie beim ersten Einsatz sehr schrill und hysterisch, was vielen Leuten nicht gefallen wird. Ich fand allerdings, dass es den Song noch irgendwie interessant gemacht hat, auch wenn es Dimmu Borgir damit in die Nähe von Cradle of Filth rückt, ohne dass die Songs wirklich ähnlich klingen oder so. Aber dieses Beauty and The Beast-Gesinge (schöner Frauengesang, Gekeife von Shagrath), ist halt vom Gothic-Metal bzw. durch Cradle of Filth durchzogen. 4. Chess with the Abyss Das Lied beginnt mit einem räudigen Riff, welches wie aus den Änfangen der 90er klingt, das aber plötzlich von großen Chören und einem toll geschrieben Orchester-Part inkl. toller Posaunen abgelöst wird. Ein wirklich toller Übergang, der schön zeigt wie man Black Metal mit Bombast verbindet. Generell ist dieses Lied ein tolles Beispiel dafür, spielen hier Riffs und Orchester doch toll miteinander. Ein Break beginnt zum Beispiel mit großen Trommeln, auf die sofort ein schönes Riff folgt das in ein Solo übergeht, welches noch mit mystischen Chören unterlegt wird um dann wieder mit Shagrath-Gesang im Refrain zu landen. Wirklich großartig. 5. Dimmu Borgir Ein selbstbetitelte großartig düster, deutlich choral ausgelegte Hyme, die mit schon mit "ohoho" Chören anfängt, die über das ganze Lied verteilt sind. Das Lied ist überwiegend im Mid-Tempo gehalten und lebt von den Orchester-Parts und dem tollen Gitarren-Instrumental in der Mitte. Das Finale des Liedes ist richtig groß; Double-Base, sägende Gitarren, bombastisches Orchester, Chöre im Duett mit Shagrath. 6. Ritualist Ritualist beginnt wirklich old-school. Akkustik-Gitarre, Black-Metal-Raserei, 4/4 Blast-Beat und dann Shagrath "Ritualist", wodrauf plötzlich der Bombast wieder da ist. Im Mittelteil hören wir Snowy-Shaw mit seiner klaren Stimme und tollem Piano im Hintergrund, das etwas an das Piano-Spiel aus dem Lied "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" erinnert. Weiter gehts mit viel Orchester und spannung-erzeugendem Geigenspiel. Zum Ende hin hört man nochmal Kirchenglocken und ein schönes Gitarren-Lead, bevor es nach dem Refrain mit hohen Frauen-Chören und viel Rythmus-Gitarre endet. 7. The Demiurge Molecule Ist ein etwas unauffälliger Song, der schnell beginnt und durch den kriechenden Refrain und den halb-geflüsterten Vocals von Shagrath sehr diabolisch und bedrohlich klingt. Hervorzuheben sind hier die tollen Bläser und den tollen Mittelteil mit den elektronischen Klängen, die sich NICHT störend in Klangbild einfügen. Ein atmosphärischer Song. 8. A Jewel Traced Through Coal Ein heftiger Song, dessen langsames Intro mit viel Orchester nicht das folgende Riff und Blastbeat-Gewitter vermuten lässt. Die wirklichen tollen Riffs, werden vom Orchester untermalt und lassen den Gitarren den Vorrang bevor es im Break mit doch nochmal mit Chor bombastisch wird. Ansonsten keift Shagrath zu den guten Riffs. Ein wirklicher toller Song, der spanned aufgebaut ist und einfach Spass macht. 9. Renewal Rockig, klassisches Gitarren-Solo wo das Orchester in seiner Spielweise dem Solo folgt. Schwer zu beschreiben klingt, aber wirklich geil. Das Songwriting ist etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig, da die Gitarren recht abgehackt sind bevor sie in Blastbeats ausbrechen nur um wieder in einem rockig hymnischen Refrain zu enden. Klingt logisch? Ja, aber nur beim lesen, da das ganze im Lied sehr schnell geschieht wirkt es erstmal befremdlich und verwirrend, wie ich finde. Zudem kommt Snowy Shaws Gesang, der allerding leider kaum auffällt, da einer eher doch tiefere Stimme im Vergleich zu Vortex hohen klaren Vocals hat. 10. Endings and Continuations Mystisch beginnend mit Sprach-Sample, komischen Keyboard-Samples steigert sich der Song wirklich zu meine persönlichen Favorit, abwechslungsreich im Tempo, viele Gitarren-Momente und schönes Orchester. Endlich kommen auch mal die Clean-Vocals richtig toll zum Einsatz und gehen nicht so unter. Die Abrahadabra-Gesänge wirken am Ende zwar etwas komisch und lustig, aber passen. Zusammenfassung: Nicht so hart, schnell wie PEM und nicht so düster wie DCA, aber dafür viel viel besser als "In Sorte Diaboli". Es gibt toller Riffs, spannendes Songwriting und wirklich toll arrangiertes Orchester. Die Produktion ist super. Für mich bleibt PEM unerreicht, aber Abrahadabra reiht sich mit DCA und ETD wohl irgendwo auf Platz 2 oder 3 ein.
