Great inexpensive adapter
This converter has worked flawlessly so far both testing with an automotive “bench rig”, and with capturing various CANs in the vehicle. I did have to swap the firmware version out for the latest release of “slcan” from the canable site, but I think that’s more to do with my usage of a windows workstation at the time.

Powerful CAN bus tool with some setup required
This has been a great CAN bus reader for digging into vehicle networks. I have used it to reverse engineer both CAN C and CAN IHS in my vehicle, and once it is up and running, it works very well and has been reliable. Some setup is required, especially if you are on a Mac. I am using an M1 MacBook Pro and needed Parallels plus Linux and Windows. I had to flash SLCAN onto the device using Linux. Windows 11 did not work for flashing in my case. On Linux, I also had to use the Brave browser since Chrome and Chromium would not cooperate. There are YouTube videos that walk through this process, and searching for something like SLCAN Amazon CAN bus reader will get you most of the way there. Once SLCAN was flashed, I had no issues connecting to it with SavvyCAN on Windows 11. From there, it has been rock solid. I have used it alongside an Adafruit Feather setup and relays to control off road lights based on CAN signals like high beams, doors, and reverse gear. It has been a really useful tool for this kind of project work. If you want something that works out of the box with no setup, this may not be it. If you are comfortable following guides and doing a bit of configuration, it is a very capable and flexible CAN bus tool. I would buy it again for this type of use.

This is how I made it work on Windows! Important tip!
I had issues making it work on my Windows 11 computer until I watched this video on youtube. "SavvyCAN works with an $18 Amazon USB adapter! Complete steps for CAN Bus sniffing and decoding." I could not detect the device or use any of the recommended apps until I flashed it to the Canable 1.0 firmware on the website. After that it was detected in device manager and in Savvy Can.
