Q: how to measure a frying pan?

This pan is 8" edge to edge at the top not counting the 1/4-inch lip, and just under 7" in the flat-bottom cooking area. I believe most stated measurements are for the top of the pan, not for the cooking area.

Q: what is the inside bottom cooking area width

The sides of the skillet are slopped so the bottom is a little smaller. I would guess the cooking area of a 8" skillet is about 7". It is a great skillet. I suggest you buy it with a lid -- it becomes more versatile. I already had a 8" lid so bought a skillet without a lid.
