Does this lantern use the cpx6 rechargeable battery pack?

They are both kinda wrong. It IS D batteries but the 3 panel takes SIX (6), not 8.

Is it possible to have one of the panels be on, while the rest of the panels and the light(s) on the base are off?

Yes it is. You can pull the panels off the base that you don't want to use when the base is on. Or if you're want to use the panels independently when taken off the base they work that way as well. The base works great without any panels on it, in fact it may be a little brighter than the individual panels.

Looking for replacement base lid. Any suggestions?

This is a great question, I also need to replace one base lid. I’m going to contact Coleman directly to see if replacement lids are available. If you get any information can you please post.

how strong is the magnet on the backs of the panels?

Strong enough. I tested it on the refrigerator... it grabbed quickly and doesn't slide while holding a postcard. I haven't had any problems with the panels falling off the lantern, but I've only used it a couple of times.
