My Sourdough Starter's Personal Trainer and My New Favorite Stick!
To the Sourdough whisperers and anyone who's ever stared into a jar of bubbling starter wondering, "How do I mix this without getting it everywhere?", let me introduce you to the Skinny Spurtle. I saw this online, described as being "for Sourdough Starter," and thought, "Is this the specialized tool my life has been missing? Is this the key to a perfectly mixed, non-exploding starter?" My curiosity (and a few messy feeding sessions) got the better of me. When this little wooden wonder arrived, it was exactly as pictured: a long, thin, elegantly shaped piece of teak wood. It felt smooth and lightweight, like a tiny, artisanal paddle. My regular spoons, which had been doing double duty as starter stirrers, looked on with a mixture of disdain and resignation. Their reign was over. Using the Skinny Spurtle for the first time felt surprisingly satisfying. It slides into the jar with ease, reaching all the way to the bottom to coax every last bit of flour and water into the mix. The "skinny" design is key โ it navigates the curves of the jar perfectly, scraping down the sides without making a mess. It's like a tiny, highly trained spatula for your starter. My starter, Bubbles (yes, still Bubbles, and now living in a fancy Weck jar, see my other review!), seemed to appreciate the gentle, thorough mixing. It bubbled with renewed vigor. But it's not just for sourdough. I've used this spurtle for getting the last bits of jam out of a jar (it's a jam-retrieval ninja!), stirring sauces in small pots, and generally poking things I probably shouldn't be poking. Its versatility is a quiet superpower. The teak wood is beautiful and feels durable. It's easy to clean โ just a quick rinse โ and the recommendation to oil it occasionally makes me feel like I'm performing a small act of woodworking maintenance, which is oddly satisfying. If you have a sourdough starter, or just appreciate a well-designed, multi-purpose wooden tool that makes mixing and scraping a breeze (and looks good doing it), this Skinny Spurtle is a fantastic addition to your kitchen. It's simple, effective, and has brought a surprising amount of ease and satisfaction to my baking routine. I'm thoroughly impressed with this elegant little stick.

Sourdough Lovers, this won't disappoint!
Recommend for a gift or treat yourself! All we eat for bread is homemade sourdough, so this spurtle gets quite a bit of use. It is wearing great, excellent value for the price. It is sturdy with a great feel in hand. It works well both in a jar and a bowl. I also use it for cookies, too! Quality material, perfect size, multi-use in the kitchen. All around good product to have in your drawer!

Perfect for sourdough starter
If you make sourdough bread, you need sourdough starter. And you need to feed it on the regular. If you maintain your starter in smaller batches in containers that are taller than they are wide, as I do, this little tool is heaven-sent. You can easily get your starter out when itโs time to mix, and just as easily stir your starter with it at feeding time. Good tools make for a good job; this is a good, simple tool, and should last you many, many happy loaves.

My sourdough go-to
My go-to whisk Obviously feeding a miniature dough blob of microscopic yeast organisms every single day is already fairly simple enough, provided you have flour and water and some minutes to discard (or don't) and mix/ or change jars according to whatever your routine is, of course. But using this awesome teak wood spatula/ dough whisk makes the process a total breeze! I dont have really long jars, but theyre long and narrow enough that using a standard utensil like any ol spoon or knife or what have you, is just kind of a hassle. So i was looking for a wooden stir stick or some such, where i could get in my jar and mix and stamp down properly. And this is definitely my go-to! It's a great tool, easiest to clean by simply wiping it with a dry paper towel when done removing all residue you can, rinsing, then wiping dry and storing it for next use. No need to keep it in the sink, unless you're in a hurry of course and cant clean it immediately? , but dough doesnt stick too terribly to it (use cold water :)) and dont be scared to scrub. If you know someone who does sourdough, gift this handy wooden dough whisk ๐

Very Impressed
I really like this spurtle for mixing sourdough starter and scraping down the sides of jars. Itโs a very useful tool, and can be used for lots of things in the kitchen. Itโs very well made, and the design is great and it has just the right angle. The lacquer seems to be strong. As with any wooden item, I wouldnโt let it sit in water.

Good product
I like this spurtle, itโs part of my sourdough accessories. Itโs a good quality product. I use it mainly for mixing during starter feeding but I still have to scrape the sides of the jar with a silicone spurtle or a silicone spatula.

Classy looking flat ended spatulas work well.
These wooden flat end spatulas arrived quickly after ordering. They look classy and work great to get that flavourful "fond" off the bottom of the pan when cooking up stew or sauces. They are finished nicely and have no odor. They are sturdy and the flat end works well in both stainless and non-stick pans.
