• After achieving minor success on Motown Records and VIP in the 1960s R&B landscape and in the early 1970s, The Spinners effectively rebooted themselves when transferring to Atlantic Records in 1972. They would go on to record the first of many records at Sigma Sound Studios, a base where the emergence of ‘Philly Soul’ is consistently linked to. Producer, Thom Bell would redefine the band in their debut record for Atlantic, 1973’s SPINNERS. The album shapes a solid identity for the band. • ‘How Could I Let You Get Away’ (US #77/SOUL #14) was their most romantic single to date with a wistful string production and harmonies that suggest resigned melancholia. It would be its b-side however, ‘I’ll Be Around’ (US #3/SOUL #1) that would elevate the band’s profile on the charts. Almost playing like a response to the A-side, the resigned melancholia remains but there’s more dignity suggested in the heightened rhythm section and soulful harmonies. • ‘Could It Be I’m Falling In Love’ (US #4/SOUL #1/UK#11) continues this newfound optimism as well as the band’s staggering commercial success whilst ‘One of a Kind (Love Affair)’ (US #11/SOUL #1) returns to the thematic concerns of ‘How Could I Let You Get Away’. Retaining Philly Sound pioneers MFSB for its instrumentation, the track maintains the feel-good outlook that was fundamental to Philly Soul. • Final single ‘Ghetto Child’ (US #29/SOUL #4/UK #7) breaks from the romantic theme of the previous singles, returning to the social consciousness that the band embraced in their tenure at Motown Records. Here, the concerns of racial inequality in contemporary America are urgent but retrofitted into the smooth album that made their critical and commercial success soar. • BBR is thrilled to release SPINNERS in a newly remastered and repackaged edition with eight bonus tracks and a brand new interview with Thom Bell. Review: Excellent pressing from MFSL. - Terrific sounding record from Mobile Fidelity. The sleeve states that the record is made from the original master tapes but we now know that there's a digital step in the process. Nevertheless, it sounds great and the pressing is flat and quiet. One of my favourite early 70s records. Took a while to arrive from the US but it got here safely and was delivered by Evri. Very securely packaged. Review: Just brilliant - This is quite simply one the finest soul albums of all time. The production of Tom Bell and the superb harmonies from one the greatest soul groups created a wonderful set of songs all of which could have been chart hits. I bought the LP in early 1974 and the tracks sound as fresh as ever in the mp3 format. Essential for all true soul fans.

The Breakthrough: A Second Beginning
1972 and 1973 were the years that the Spinners finally got the chance to breakthrough to a wide audience after years on Motown without any huge success. Now with producer/writer team Thom Bell/Linda Creed, and a deal on Atlantic, they Spinners' hard work finally paid off after years. This joint is surely a winner, with some heavy hitting mid-tempo soul jams. This one contains some legendary jams like the rolling funk of "I'll Be Around" and "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love" heavily laden with strings, a staple of Philly Soul. "I'll Be Around" is one of my favorite soul jams of all time, and even though I am 10 years younger than the song is, I remember listening to it and loving it in junior high school (in the mid 90's) when L.A. hip-hop station Power 106 FM had time set aside time for old school jams. Rapper Rappin' 4-Tay also made his own version of it in 1994, a wonderful hip-hop jam which took the funky rolling music and some of the hook vocals for the rap song. Another one of my favorites here is "Just Me and You Baby," a slower, ballad type jam with heavenly harmony. "Ghetto Child" is heavy mid-tempo jam exploring the bad side of growing up in the `hood, very sad and timeless. "How Could I Let You Get Away" is a sadder lyrically rich song laden with sitars later in the song. Phillipe Wynne, Bobbie Smith (great singers), and company surely deliver a rich album full of lush Thom Bell production and sweet harmony and melody; the transition from Detroit to Philly surely was a lucrative one. 1974's Mighty Love is another wonderful soulful album as is 1975's Pick of the Litter. The Spinners are definitely essential listening in order to truly experience what Philly Soul has to offer.
