The Code of Funk

An amazing album with very good notation!! Possibly one of the greatest funk drumming books out, The Code of Funk is really detailed, it has one or two pages before each song, where Garibaldi has broken down each section of the song into the main groove, he also explains how to play it accurately and a bit of context about the groove and the song as a whole. The provided audio CD gives a drumless track which has very good audio quality and can be imported and used on an mp3 player while playing. Also provided are two more disks, a loop disk and an individual voice breakdown which can be used on virtually any DAW software and can be sped up or slowed down without casing distortion - a very helpful feature. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to fine tune their funk chops as it has everything a drummer needs to learn and master several funk techniques. 5 stars all the way!!

This is a really great book and music combo. The play along tracks are proper Tower of Power recordings and David Garabaldi’s charts are brilliant.

Second time ordering this book as I misplaced my first one, using it for a Rockschool Level 4 diploma and the pieces, while being difficult, are amazing

As a drummer of 10 years and a massive fan of Tower of Power, I've long wanted to learn some of the amazing grooves in their songs. This is the first David Garibaldi book I've bought and it certainly won't be the last. Initially this bundle appeared confusing, with 3 discs and very difficult looking drum music filling the book, but included on one of the DVDs is a tutorial, which gives you all the information you need to start using this system. One of the best features I have used so far are the loops - I downloaded Acid Xpress on PC for free to open them straight off the DVD. This allows you to quickly and easily begin learning sections of each song at your own pace - slowing the loop down, eliminating the backing track or David on drums one at a time in order to perfect the groove before you play along with the backing track at full speed. Just awesome, a whole new way of learning! Really having a lot of fun with this, it is going to take me hours and hours to perfect each song but it is very good fun and very worth it! So don't be put off by the apparent confusing and unconventional layout of this book, go for it! If you are a Tower of Power fan you will absolutely love it. Would buy it again with no hesitation.

Ich bin Garibaldi Fan seit 1973 und bin damals schon ausgeflippt an seinen inovativen Kreationen (verständnislos). Gott sei Dank findet man auch mittlerweile Notationen vom Oakland Stroke u.s.w. Mitgeliefert wird die CD Oakland Zone minus the Drummer, eine DVD mit Wave files, um dies in ein beliebiges Programm zu importieren (cubase -logic oder pro tools)und dann nur die drums zu hören. Wirklich saugut, aber auch schwierig ! Für Fortgeschrittene! Und bezugnehmend auf die Kritik von hier, jeder echte Fan hat doch die CD Oakland Zone mit allen Songs :-)

I have been playing drums and teaching drums for many years of my life. One of my favorite genres of music is funk, and my favorite band is Tower of Power. I am 56 years old and have followed TOP since I was sixteen. The sound, the phrasing that Dave Garibaldi's book "The code of Funk" teaches is nothing short of amazing! In order to use the book, you should already have a good feeling for reading drum music, and have a free interpretational spirit of playing style. This book is worth the purchase alone just for the audio CD that has TOP playing the choice of eight songs as the full band, followed by the same eight songs minus the drums, so you get to do all the work. There is also another CD that allows you to loop tracks and create your own loops as well. I highly recommend "The Code of Funk" to those drummer's who really dig that funky groove with some ambience to their playing along with a very phat feel and sound.

If you wanna play funk...well here's the right book for it. Very good book and very good teacher...The play-along songs are the real deal...vocals included.
