Rebecca Hall and Michael C. Hall star in this biographical drama directed by Antonio Campos. The film tells the story of Christine Chubbuck (Hall), a Sarasota television news reporter relentlessly pushing for a promotion at her male-dominated network. With her boss Michael (Tracy Letts) demanding she chase more exciting stories in a bid to boost ratings, Christine begins to feel the pressure as her determination to provide meaningful social justice reports coupled with her lack of on-screen personality begin to damage her chances of achieving her goals. After then turning down the advances of her co-worker and long-term love interest George (Hall), Christine's world begins to unravel as feelings of loneliness and depression begin to push her over the edge. Christine is fantasltuous tic and utterly devestating
This film based on the true story of Florida news reporter Christine Chubbuck really is heartbreaking. Christine always the smartest person in the room determined to get the best story and reveal the human aspect of every story finds herself at odds with her boss as he wants more juicy stories with more blood and guts to increase viewing figures. Christine who is a very fragile woman who is plagued with self doubt in her abilities slowly begins to go on a downward spiral which isn't helped by having a tumultuous home life which ultimately ends with taking her life live on air. Rebecca Hall is utterly astonishing in this role, she captures both Chubbuck's confidence and her fragility to perfection. At the beginning of the film is is very confident in how she does her job, but gradually as the film progresses she slowly breaks and her view and way she believes news should be reported gets very clouded. The fact that Rebecca Hall wasn't even Oscar nominated for this role is simply shocking, it has to one of best performances i have ever seen, how Emma Stone won the Oscar that year for La La Land when Rebecca Hall wasn't even nominated is simply incredible. Another aspect of this film that is very good is the period detail and its portrayal of the newsroom, reminding me of James L Brooks Broadcast News and Sidney Lumet's Network. The supporting cast including Michael C Hall is terrific but this really is Rebecca Hall film and her performance and the film itself never sensationalizes the story, it tells the story with dignity and pathos. Just like Christine Chubbuck wanted to get to the heart of a story, this film gets to the heart of Christine Chubbuck. A Highly recommended film.

Powerful true story packs a punch
Rebecca Hall is a massive talent and though this is essentially a modest and unshowy film her performance is both restrained and so impressive. This film depicts the real life story of a local news reporter in America who apparently committed suicide on air.The film explores the myriad pressures and reasons why this happened allowing Rebecca Hall to present a layered character, both ambitious and fragile as she comes up against a changing news landscape and enormous pressure to deliver ratings. Other characters are well portrayed but this is Hall's film. The milieu of news studios and the period setting are both very effective, as is the portrayal of a news media that didn't always know what to do with its female journalists. A small film with a powerful and intensely sad story of a female character ahead of her time. Both shocking and difficult to watch at times but nicely written, not prurient and intensely sympathetic to Halls character without showing her as a saint or victim.

Slow burner
This film has a great cast but i felt the script was slow and frankly boring . It could of been more powerful in telling this based on a true story film if the script was stronger.

Thought Provoking True Story
A thought provoking film and one which relates a one's struggles with depression and loneliness due and at the same time trying to keep it all together within the pressures and setbacks that she went through. Rebecca Hall was perfectly cast and doesn't disappoint in her delivery, always thought she was a good actresses but really shows in this film.

Such a heartbreaking true story...
(Fair warning, the trailer doesn't give away any spoilers but PLEASE watch this movie not knowing anything as it gets shocking. It leaves some life details out so it would also be great to do some research afterwards.) Based on the life of reporter Christine Chubbuck, this movie has actress Rebecca Hall portraying her in the year 1974. I knew of Christine's story since the early 2000's as I've heard it time and time again however, I never knew that there was a movie based on her story that released in 2016. Going into the movie, I already knew how things ended for poor Christine but I was quite surprised to see how dark it was. The detail on the makeup and effects were really good almost making me want to cry. Of course on the opposite side of things, I've seen many people criticizing this film saying it's "tedious" and "poorly acted" so it's all subjective. I personally didn't think it was bad at all, Rebecca did absolute justice to the stubborn, awkwardly charming, and lovable woman that Christine seemed to be in real life. There were some scenes with such intense feeling and emotion that I think Rebecca conveyed brilliantly, again almost making me want to cry. I have to also give credit to all the other actors as I think they did great jobs and never came off as annoying or irrelevant, I think I liked Jean the most but again I saw people criticizing the way that Christine acts towards Jean towards the middle to the end. I understand why she was upset with her but many said that it made them hate Christine as a person. That's valid but keep in mind that Jean Reed and most if not all characters in this film are based off real people so I can truly believe that Christine really acted this was towards Jean. There were quite a few things cut from real life such as one incident where Christine got angry that someone placed flowers on her interviewing table (I assume it was Andrea Kirby who was dating her crush George Peter Ryan) she must've had a feeling it was Andrea as she threw the flowers at the wall and screamed for no one to place anything on her table. This is just one scenario that I'm sure would've made more people dislike Christine but I personally would've liked to have seen it as it shows how devastated she was to see George fall head over heels with Andrea. Another thing not included was that Christine planned to bake a cake and confess her love for George on his birthday but while talking he brought up how Andrea was taking him to dinner on that night. I already related to Christine in so many ways but these things had they been included in the film would've made me feel even more so. Still, I recommend doing more research if you're really invested in Christine's story but for the most part it includes all of the vital information and imo tells it extremely well. As of now I believe there's only 2 copies of her last broadcast that are kept hidden for good reason. I don't see them appearing for a long while but even if they do it's very controversial. She wanted to show her last brodcast on TV to show that people at the time were getting desensitized to these things and I think she was right. People nowadays are much more desensitized compared to the 70s. In the end I just feel so bad for her, she wasn't perfect but we all are very much like that in some way. I just relate so much to Christine.. the fear of growing old with no one at your side, the feelings of inadequacy, the negative thoughts that you can't achieve your dream job, the pressure to conform to society.. It's all so real. Released 5 years ago in 2016 the blu ray picture quality is pretty great. Some scenes lacked detail and grain was also present at times but they didn't cause any distractions. For most of the film it showed the beautiful detail of the actors and their time accurate outfits especially during closeups. Moving on to audio quality, it's presented only in English but has subtitles for Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finish and English languages. The films soundtrack is recorded in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and its quite impressive. It doesn't wow you as many other films and TV shows do but the audio from start to finish was very crisp and satisfying. This blu ray DVD is also only watchable on region free DVD/Blu ray/4k players in America as its imported from overseas so make sure you have one. Overall a really great film in my opinion. RIP Christine Chubbuck 🙏

It is a Region 2 dvd. Will not play on American DVD players.
Loved the movie. I knew of her and what happened. But, I like how the movie showed her slow descent into depression.
