Review: Fantastic Cynic release - Unlike opeth's directional change to herratage, I am very fond of the way that Cynics music has progressed. Although the harsh vocals are missed, i think that musically, this is their best album. Review: Take a Trip, man. - Sophisticated guitar, bass and drum playing melodic and erratically enchanting along with the soft delicate vocals... this is an album which makes me feel good. Prog Rock at it's finest and most dazzling... certainly a trip I am glad to have took and will take many more times Highly recommend, softer than previous albums but all the more enchanting.

Clean vocals work extremely well for this release.
This is my favourite Cynic album. I love growly death metal vocals, but this album works so well without them. It's very well structured, providing great pleasure on many replays. If you like death metal, but are put off by the lack of "ferocity" in this recording, please give this incredible album a chance by listening to it twice, and then see if you are entertained enough on the replay to embrace its sound. Fun lyrics too: "Animals are something invented by plants to move seeds around An extremely yang solution to a peculiar problem which they faced Now I must take their medicine"

Every new album from these guys is a whole new world
Deserves to be played a million times as it gets more and more interesting the more you listen to it.

Another great chapter for Cynic
Kindly Bent To Free Us is another great album by Cynic. Paul, Sean and Malone's musicianship is excellent as always, full of amazing melodic, intricate guitar & drum-work, beautiful progressions and odd time signatures. The bass is more pronounced than ever and it's a welcomed change as in my opinion as you can appreciate Malone's contribution the record. My favourites are Moon Heart Sun Head, Gitanjali & Holy Fallout but all the songs are great. It has a far more natural sound compared to the highly polished releases like Traced In Air and Carbon Based Anatomy, but I'd say it was intentional and adds to the atmosphere and dynamics of the songs. Overall a very solid release by Cynic showcasing their constant evolution and musical prowess. A classic no doubt.

In my opinion their worst album
First average Cynic album. I love Focus and Portal Tapes. Traced in Air has some good songs on it too. But this is regress. Diluted "density" and "complexity" on one hand and rather average melodies on the other. On top of that vocals are nothing special. Male vocals were never a strong point in their music but now Masvidal's mannerisms are unbearable for me. I listened to this few times but don't really like it. If for some people "kindly...." is brilliant than more power to them.

I have really been enjoying hearing this band! I had wanted to hear some of their previous releases at various times, but finally decided it was time to give them a listen. AND I AM GLAD THAT I DID!! This album is brilliant!! Great depth and spirited playing here by a band who doesn't really sound like anyone else! I hear some leanings towards OSI and Frost going on here, but that is the closest I can come to describing them. Maybe a bit of Gordian Knot, since Sean Malone's excellent bass skills move these songs along in the right direction! I absolutely love this style of music! It is thought provoking and smart. A VERY welcome addition to my collection of music!

This album is sure to divide their already-divided fanbase, but openminded fans should find this to be perhaps their strongest album to date. The music here is uplifting, a masterful blend of emotion and artistry, technicality and feel. Cynic has developed comfortably into a three-piece band and their songs now feature more space for nuance and subtlety. Gone are the intricate, interwoven guitar lines (in fact the guitar playing is on the whole much more subtle than before), but in its place you get wonderful interplay between bass and drums. The two Seans shine throughout the album, picking their spots with the sort of unerring insight that only comes with their advanced musical knowledge and experience. Perhaps the biggest improvement here is in the vocal department. Cynic has never been a band I listen to for the vocals but Paul's voice is one of the album's strong points. His melodies, harmonies, layering, use of effects have all been taken up several notches from previous releases. Evidence of this is all over opening track "True Hallucination Speak". As much as I'd love to see Cynic return to a more metal-oriented sound, I'm glad they resisted that temptation. They obviously don't feel pressured by expectations and have followed their hearts and made the album they were destined to make, instead of the album they were expected to make.
