Does it have an off position on the switch to keep it from accidentally going off in your pocket?

Yes. Where the 3-2-1 whistle levels push it all the way & it will be in the off position.

Is there a trick to getting the battery cover off? I pushed the switch down but I can't get it off. I don't want to force it and break it.

I push switch down and use my finger nail at the same time and pull it open. Not the best design but that works for me.

Is there a volume control? Is that what the “3 tones” means... I want to use this in a 500 sq ft classroom. Not sure if it will be too loud.

The three tones means there are three different whistle sounds. It does not have a volume control. We use it outside to referee soccer. I have "tested" it in my house, and it's pretty loud. However, I have small rooms, also. If you use it in a short burst as opposed to a prolonged tone, you would probably be ok. However, it really depends on how loud you need it to be to be heard.

Is this whistle all black or red and black? The description states black but the photo is red and black.
