Anatomy, particularly functional anatomy, is a vital and dynamic subject, an appreciation of which leads not only to superior husbandry and welfare, but also to a better understanding of the anatomical challenges associated with riding, training, overtraining, injury and rehabilitation. Using Alexa McKenna's fabulous illustrations, this book shows the correlation of the skeleton, muscular system and locomotion, providing a clear insight into the functional and dysfunctional horse. It also addresses the largely misunderstood concept of 'perfect conformation' and looks at the effect on function of the rider and tack, using cutting-edge diagnostic techniques such as thermal imaging and gait analysis. Again with the emphasis on the visual, readers will be able to appreciate how muscles function in differing athletic disciplines by analysing the heat generated in musculoskeletal structures after exercise. This will also highlight the importance of post-competition recovery. The book concludes with a range of useful techniques to improve the function of any horse, including stretches, taping, wrapping and other proprioceptive techniques to increase balance, flexibility, awareness and posture. ... where near as in depth as I would have liked it to be
No where near as in depth as I would have liked it to be. The book felt like the writers were rushing through the information.

Not enough in-depth
If you want to go beyond the usual textbook knowledge this is a good starting Point. Many ideas are shown illustrating ideas to avoid common pitfalls with unfitting saddles and other gear. Most parts of the book are rushed through without much detail at all. The best part of the book to me was the description and pictures of riders who have an issue with their body symmetry. I would have appreciated more in-depths analysis of the problems underlying the symptoms throughout the book. The foreword by Hilary Clayton and the price tag made my expectation rise and could not be met entirely.

Get the best performance out of your horse
If more people read this book, there would be a lot less unhappy horses. It added more to my equine tool box and made me want to hit my old coach who would be on my case that my horse wasn't bending in his circles. "That's because he CAN'T!"

This book should be in every rider and horse-owner's library
This book should be on every horse owner and rider's bookshelf. Period. My guess is that this book could do more to enhance understanding of the biomechanical aspects of horse's wellbeing and their rider's care and enjoyment of their animal than any other book that i have seen. Most importantly, it enhances one's sensitivity to, and understanding of, these wonderful and immensely complex creatures. They give so much to us that the very least we can do is be sensitive to their physical needs. This book goes a very long way towards doing just that and has the power, I think, to make everyone a better owner and rider. The cover price may, to some, appear high, but it will no doubt pay for itself many, many times over by giving owners the understanding and insight to appreciate potential issues early on and help avoid potentially costly veterinary and other bills later on. As others have said, Horse Movement is very well-written, superbly illustrated, and a surprisingly easy and engrossing read. Highly recommended.
