According to amazon, the generation 1 was 600 dpi and the generation 2 is 1200. can the new 680W scan at 1200? is the quality better than 1st gen?

My Epson FF-680W can actually scan photos at 300, 600 and 1200 dpi, selectable by the user in advanced settings before scanning an item. File sizes are huge at 1200 and very large at 600 and scanning times are also much longer when 600 or 1200 are selected. The default scan is 300, with three files created - standard front, standard back if the back contains anything the scanner sees, and automatic enhanced front which is often very good with older/faded photos. You can trash any of the three or save them all.

Will it do two sided printing and envolopes?

The FF-680W can scan double-sided documents. Envelopes could be scanned using the driver if Double-Feed detection is turned off for that scan. - The Epson Scanner Team

Can if be opened for cleaning? If so, what cleaning supplies should be used?

Yes, the Epson scanner opens to reveal the rollers and scanner light. I clean mine using a dust free cloth. Epson supplies one with their unit.

Is there a "hands on class" you can take to learn how to work this? at a staples, office depot, or another retail store i could go to for a class.
