If you look up stainless steel, there are many different varieties and some are NOT magnetic. So those who say this is aluminum need to do a little research.

what is the benefit of buying a berkey primer? is it necessary to do so?

It is helpful if you are in an emergency situation and do not have running water, or if your faucets have a screen or odd shape that might prevent getting a good seal with the priming button.
