As a first year nursing student this book has really helped me to understand how to achieve my competencies whilst out in practice.

I am currently a final year student nurse. This book is a very useful companion to have for your studies. The book contains 5 sections each containing chapters to help you though your studies and placements. The book is written to give advice and information about care, compassion and communitcation but goes into more depth in leadership and management in healthcare. It relates to the 6C's of nursing which are key for your nurse training. The book also used references throughout from key reports and guidlines in the NHS, for example NMC and NICE guidlines, and the Francis Report. I would highly recommend this book to student nurses starting their course it really is worth having a read through and will certainly help you with upcoming assignments and give you advice for placements. An all round really useful book.

This is a well written, well structured vital Book for ALL student nurses! This book breaks down what is expected of the student in their professional development, identifying areas for the student to work on, develop, research and reflect. As a final year student nurse this book has been beneficial for my management placement. This book has been beneficial by using up to date research and references for students to use, with a chapter based on the importance and implementation of leadership and management in placement. This book would be beneficial especially for first year students by obtaining an understanding of what is expected of them whilst on placement and ideal ways to begin to manage their time on the ward for their patients and themselves, with ideal reflection questions to identify areas of development and areas for feedback from mentors to place in their portfolio or use for personal tutorials. I highly recommend this book not only for practice benefit, but for the use of references of evidence based practice in assignments and exams throughout the course!

This is fundamental reading for undergraduate nurses regardless of field of practice to guide them through the four domains of competency. It is a straightforward read with opportunities to select discreet topics of learning without losing the overall direction of the book. It is contains excellent activities and challenging cases studies to support and extend learning opportunities. I would argue the importance of this book also lies beyond the pre-registration student population and is of significant value to mentors, lecturers, those returning to practice and international nurses registering in the UK.

I'm currently in my second year of my degree nursing course and have found this book to be of great help. The language is easy to understand and everything is explained with the appropriate amount of depth. I did find that some of the early chapters were a bit basic for me as I'm a bit more advanced for it, but if I could've read this book in my first year or even in my pre-nursing then I feel that my stress levels that comes with this would've been significally decreased. I found the later chapters to be of great help. Especially the chapter that discusses communicating in difficult situations, that is something I found very hard to do and this book has great advice on that. It also has advice on how to effectively work as a team and to even be a leader which will help me greatly in my third year for my management placement. So for all you incoming student nurses or already student nurses you should get this book. I'm gonna read this book again just to make sure I fully take everything in (I clearly have no social life :).)

as a mentor I felt this book would be useful for others in my work place, it gives ideas on how students can achieve competencies making the wordy NMC competencies more understandable and user friendly. however the kindle version is unusable. the boxed text does not enlarge so even on the largest setting, when the normal text then becomes unusable, is too small to be read. can this be sorted please as I have had to send my copy back and i really wanted to use it! I have given it 1 star just because of the compatibility issues with electronic version

In an area where many books are difficult to use; this books offers a refreshing, supportive and personalised aid to student nurses seeking guidance in the more practical applications of degree level nursing. It is constructed logically with information that is aimed to cover all core competencies of the full nursing degree programme, while not excluding particular years or fields by including too much jargon or field specific content. Unlike other texts that I have read, this book is concise in the information that it offers the reader so that it can be read cover to cover through interest, or can also be dipped into and out of for research. The information provided is evidence based and considers best practice at all times in some fields where this can be confusing and tricky for students to do so themselves; however it's approach uses exercises that allow the reader to reflect on their experiences and their own practice so that better understand is promoted for the individual. I highly recommend for any current student nurse or those working towards studying in this area.
