"[Herrera's] expressive and fluid prose is able to keep pace with Kahlo's riveting canvases and adds to the experience of viewing them. . . . A superb tribute." โ Booklist In small, stunningly rendered self-portraits, Mexican artist Frida Kahlo painted herself cracked open, hemorrhaging during a miscarriage, anesthetized on a hospital gurney, and weeping beside her own extracted heart. Her works are so incendiary in emotion and subject matter that one art critic suggested the walls of an exhibition be covered with asbestos. In this beautiful book, art historian Hayden Herrera brings together numerous paintings and sketches by Kahlo, documenting each with explanatory text that probes the influences in Kahloโs life and their meaning for her work. Included among the illustrations are more than eighty full color paintings, as well as dozens of black and white pictures and line illustrations. Among the famous and little-known works included in Frida Kahlo: The Paintings are The Two Fridas , Self Portrait as a Tehuana , Without Hope , The Dream, The Little Deer , Diego and I , Henry Ford Hospital , My Birth , and My Nurse and I . Here, too, are documentary photographs of Frida Kahlo and her world that help to illuminate the various stages of her life. Review: Very extensive collection of paintings - Very extensive review of all her paintings. Writer (Herrera) gave a summary of Fridoโs life. Very well done and helpful. Review: Beautiful Book Opens up Frida's life - The illustrations and narrative are both lovely. I thought I knew everything I needed to about this fascinating woman and her life. I learned much more and I can appreciate her paintings with more insight. I originally bought this to give as a birthday present for a 13 year old. It is not appropriate for a sheltered 13 year old. So I kept if for myself. I keep it out on a book table where I can look at it from time to time.

Great Book!
I was trying to find a good book about the late Ms. Frida Kahlo and in my search, I came across this book. Honestly, the price really caught my attention. So, I purchased the book and wasn't able to put it down. It was able to start my journey to really read even more of the rollercoaster life of Ms. Kahlo. Plus the Author really gives good detail on each art piece featured in his book. I highly recommend this book.

Very good analysis of Fridas paintings and life
I first came to know about Frida Kahlo when I watched a movie about her life. As I like arts and as I have bought also a book about Fridas life by the same author, I decided to buy this one about her paintings too. This is a big book that presents Fridas paintings and analyses them deeply (but not in a boring way), crossing all this artistic data of the artist with her personal moment of life, as well as with the influence of the historical moment Frida lived in. Very good book if you like not just to see good art printed, but also if you always ask yourself why artists paint the way they paint, what are the factors and historical influences behind that.
