Pond heater
The K&H Pet Products Stock Tank & Pond Heater is a great tool if you want to keep your outdoor water tanks or ponds from freezing in cold weather. Itโs designed to maintain a safe temperature for animals or fish, which is super helpful in winter. Users say itโs reliable, easy to install, and durable enough to handle outdoor conditions. If you have pets or livestock that need access to unfrozen water, this heater could be a solid choice!

It works great! Stock tank de-icer.
I have a 50 gallon tank and this kept it from completely icing over in 0 and -0 windchill we had this winter. A+ on this one. The cord is long enough to be out of the way. It is super durable.

Update down to 1star from 5
January 2025 After using this last year for just those few days I put it away. I pulled it out last week because our temps are falling to minus 0 degrees this coming week. I put it in the pond and plugged it in. A couple of nights ago I noticed I couldnโt hear my pond air stone bubbling, everything was off. It had tripped the breaker. 2 resets and it wouldnโt stay on. I moved the heater plug to a different outlet on a different line. The next morning I discovered the second breaker was also tripped. I used this heater less than 2 weeks total. I reached out to the company as it has a 2 year warranty. January 2024 This is the first pond heater I have purchased in years. Normally I have air stones which keeps the ice thin enough that I can poke holes easily for air exchange. Sometimes I pour hot water over holes to make them bigger. This has worked pretty well for the past couple of years. Before that there were a couple of years of no frozen pond. (Pretty amazing because I live in Colorado.) The past week our temps dropped to below zero with wind chill in minus double digits. We also had snow. I decided I didnโt want to deal with it. I ordered this heater, made a hole with a pot set on the ice with boiling water and dropped the heater in. The hole was just large enough. The very top of the heater iced up but there was an ice free rim around the heater. Two days later I discovered the heater had been secretly melting the ice from below and on the coldest day I had a larger hole than I started with. I will probably only use this when the temps are this cold. Hopefully it will last a long time.

Cheap materials but works really great!
The price was great but the red part is very, very cheap plastic and pieces were breaking off before we even started using it in the tank. However, it is doing a fine job of keeping the cut off barrel (about 16 inches tall) ice free. I wanted something that was not aluminum but did not expect this cheap of a product . . . and I believe the heater element is aluminum anyway . . . oh well! UPDATE: IT IS VERY COLD LAST NIGHT (-8 APPROX) AND TODAY A HIGH OF 1 DEGREE. THIS HEATER IS KEEPING THE TANK OPEN BUT HAS THIN ICE ON THE TOP EXCEPT IMMEDIATELY ABOVE THE ELEMENT. BY COMPARISON, THE HEATER WE HAVE IN THE TANK THAT IS TWICE THIS SIZE, IS KEEPING THE TANK COMPLETELY UNFROZEN/ FREE OF ICE.

Awesome help
This worked amazing even with the cold winter last winter. My tank was kept out of the wind and I put the electric cord thru a pvc pipe to keep it safe from the goats. Not one time did it let water freeze. Goats drank more water due tonit being warm and seemed to keep them in better health. Total winner will always use these now and they do not hurt to much on the electric bill

service after the sale
I purchased 2 of these at the same time. One of them never worked quite right, it kept tripping the GFCI, so I put it away & the next season I got it out & tried it again, no luck. I was about to replace it & found it had a 2 year warranty. I called the company & they gave me some quick tips & then replaced it. Service after the sale was great!

Didn't even last one mild winter
Didn't even last one winter, and this has been an unusually mild winter. We used to buy these in the local feed store when they were white plastic, and they did pretty well. But no one around carries them anymore. I bought one of these red ones here on Amazon, and maybe this is why the stores don't care these anymore. Guess I'll have to switch to the metal floating one I have in the other tank that's lasted a few years already. Just unfortunate they're twice as expensive. I'll give it two stars because it worked for awhile, but yeah, disappointed. Won't be buying this brand again.

Excellent
I have tried a number of these types of tank and pond deicers. This is the only one that actually works in bitter cold weather. I was skeptical given its cost and it only having 500 watts, but I was pleasantly surprised that this thing is a total boss and keeps going and going. It is a tank. I would definitely buy this again, but because it is so good I probably won't have to.

It surprised me.....
With the help of a very creative neighbor we set up a simplified moving water system to prevent my 330 gallon tank from freezing over the winter. To be proactive I purchased this stock tank water heater that is both floating and submersible and with the help of a small pump hooked up to batteries and a battery charger I have been able to keep my water tank from freezing. Being careful to not overload my small availability to power of only 30 Amps. I purchased one size smaller than I thought I should based on my location. I thought that I would be using this as a backup in case it froze however the combination is working better and is not using as much power. Our winter this has been mild with specs of minus 27 C and back above freezing up and down this winter. Very happy with this at least for this winter and I will be looking at creating a solar system to support this system for the winter next year so that this little item will be able to handle its job... Should our temperatures stay below -20 C for many more days than it has this year. Planning to increase the insulation around the tank to guarantee success.

Turns an Ice Rink Back into Water
Dropped it in, plugged it in, and boom โ no more frozen stock tank. The floater ring keeps it where it should be, and the water stays drinkable even in serious cold. Not flashy, just does its job like a winter workhorse. Ice lost. ๐งโ๐

Is it workin?
So far so good. I took a bit of a leap of faith being I didn't know the actual gallon size of my pond. I decided to use it submerged and took off the floating ring. The night I put in the pond we had a decent sized snow storm. I noticed the snow looked like it was going to form ice and I couldn't see the heater anymore. I was concerned that it was a dud. It definitely didn't melt it away. I took it out and tested it and it was working. I put it back and so far it seems fine. I think maybe it needs a few days to slowly warm up the pond first. We haven't had any more really cold days since that storm, so ill update my review when that happens. One thing for sure the fish sure like it. And I had a resident frog that I thought had left and now hes back. So for sure I know its warmin up the place , I like it, but the cold will be the real test.

NOT thermostatically controlled and DANGEROUS!
Product claims "All K&H Ultimate Stock Tank Deicers are thermostatically controlled. This means they will automatically turn on and off as needed to keep the water in your stock tank from freezing." This is not the case and this unit continued to heat to the point of melting the plastic frame as the picture shows. because of this, it is an extreme drain on electricity. I've been required to continually unplug and plug it in to keep it from melting the entire unit and burning my animals as they drink. This has been VERY inconvenient and not safe but I need to keep it going so my animal's water doesn't freeze. I will be getting a different heater for next winter for sure!!
