Gary Sinise directed and stars in this powerful, wonderfully acted version of John Steinbeck's classic, written for the screen by playwright Horton Foote. The story focuses on the relationship between the strong but feeble-minded Lennie (John Malkovich) and his protector, George (Sinise), migrant laborers who toil in the California fields during the Depression while dreaming of someday having their own stretch of land. Ray Walston, Sherilyn Fenn, Casey Siemaszko also star. 110 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English. Region Free Review: Great Movie - John Malkovich at his best. Best version of movie. Worth the watch
I read the book in high school. Granted, I don't remember much of what it was about these many years later. I enjoyed the movie very much. The acting was great, and it was set in an era that I enjoy seeing on film. It did have it's sad moments though. John Malkovich and Gary Sinise got totally into their characters. They land another job as migrant workers on a farm in California. As the movie progresses, it becomes apparent just how much Lenny's behavior isn't as innocent as it first seemed. The very reason trouble followed everywhere they tried to start over. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. If you enjoy watching depression era movies, I think you'll like this one.

An absolute must see. In my top 10 favorite movies of all time
This movie is awesome. The acting is just phenomenal and the story a true classic. Not a bad thing to say about the content of the movie. The only bad thing I have to say about the purchase is the DVD itself was not compatible with all of my DVD players. There was a disclaimer on the DVD sleeve explaining if the movie did not play correctly on your DVD you could go to the root menu and advance the movie from there but it was not an option really as it only allowed me to advance to special features of the DVD and not progress to a certain part of the movie itself. In defense of the DVD I should mention that 2 of my DVD players are off brand, cheapest DVD players on the planet. When I switched to my better quality DVD player the video ran great . With the cheap players it would freeze up and could not be restarted except from the beginning. These cheap players do play other DVDs without a problem though .

a film you will never forget...
When I was growing up, my mother taught me many wise lessons. One that I'll never forget is the importance of compassion. "It's easy to love people who are attractive and charming," she'd say. "A truly great person," she'd remind me, "cares for those who aren't so easy or pleasant to love." Perhaps her words are the reason I fell in love with the book thirty years ago. The movie, now over a decade old, is as powerful as the book. I have taught high school for 23+ years, and no other film I've ever shown has had this impact. Sixteen and seventeen year olds are a pretty tough audience; each year when I show this I am reminded of the universal language and educational impact of good cinema. Quite often, the bell rings for the change of classes and students remain in their seats. They laugh out loud at times and almost always leave with moist eyes when the film ends. Many have asked to borrow the movie to share with family and friends. I literally wore out the VHS tape with so much use. Now, it is the DVD I share with them. I honestly believe this film has the potential to introduce young and old alike to classic literature while reminding them of the complexities of the human condition.

Humble, simple, and with great emotional impact
I agree with other reviewers...this is a great film and deserves far more recognition than it ever received. I was never a big Gary Sinise fan, but after seeing this film realized how gifted (as opposed to "talented"), he is. His direction infuses this film with far more emotional impact than almost any I have seen. To this day, I especially remember the scene where George and Lenny, sitting in the room shared by several men, are discussing their "dream." Ray Walston lay on a bed across the room, and he was hearing George tell the story...Ray sits up and says, "Do you know of such a place?" The lighting, the direction, the acting all absorb the viewer and you are there in that room, with others whose lives have been broken down beyond salvage, and for a moment you can feel the spark of hope that such a person may feel when they begin to think they may have "one more chance" at something of value in life. I can't say any more about the performances than have already been said... Remarkable is a word that doesn't begin to describe it. A great film.

Les relations humaines abordées sous l'angle de l'amitié sans faille... Une belle fidélité à l'oeuvre originale, des grands acteurs que l'on suit avec un immense plaisir du début à la fin.

I bought this DVD for our school's collection of films used in comparing and discussing the differences between the book and the film version. The best proof of this film's quality was the total silence during the viewing.

The service was fine for this excellent 1992 movie. It’s not often I will say this but I thought this was better than the black and white original from 1939. John Malkovich was simply amazing as the tragic Lenny. Gary Sinise underplays perfectly as Lennys companion George, proving to be the perfect sparring partner for Malkovich’s Lenny. Gary Sinise also directed this version and he did such an excellent job I was surprised to hear he never got behind the camera again. But it’s the Malkovich show in this movie and he blew me away with his riveting performance as Lenny. Would highly recommend.

I enjoy watching this film every once in a while , so I felt it was only right to buy it for my none stop growing blu ray collection! I’m always reminded of high school watching this film as we had to read the book in English 10 and right after finishing the book we got to watch this movie in class . I would say everyone should watch this film at least once in their lives !! “Tell me about the rabbits George” will always be stuck in my mind from this movie alone .
