Tim Conway, Don Knotts. The most inept investigators in the history of Scotland Yard are dispatched to a mansion to solve a murder. A classic comedy the whole family will enjoy! 1981/color/97 min/PG/fullscreen. Review: A Note - The film stars Don Knotts as Inspector Winship and Tim Conway as Dr. Tart. It's a little scary, not for the faint of heart. All the characters are weird and some are very funny. So you should buy this movie, it's worth the dollars. Innocent, fun whodunit with bumbling dimwits Don Knotts & Tim Conway doing their best Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson impressions.
BOTTOM LINE: A fun & funny whodunnit, with two of comedy's all-time best at the helm. THE PRIVATE EYES is a prefect way to spend a rainy Saturday evening. 4 STARS THE STORY: Last big screen pairing of Knotts & Conway is a sweetly innocent Victorian-esque whodunnit set in merry old England. Inspector Winship (Knotts) & Dr. Tart (Conway) are a couple of ex-pats working for Scotland Yard. They are assigned to a case involving the deaths of a high society couple. The lavish manor is staffed by an extremely eclectic group of servants. Everyone is a suspect (of course) and soon the bodies are piling up all over the place, while our two clueless detectives fumble through one badly-rhymed clue after another. THOUGHTS: There are some genuinely hilarious gags here, along with some so-so ones and a few jokes that fall flat. The good news is that the whole family can watch this silly comedy caper without worrying about offending younger eyes & ears. Bernard Fox, ('Dr. Bombay' from TV's "Bewitched"), has a small but amusing role as the estate's butler, who goes bonkers every time he hears the word 'murder.' Trisha Noble is just drop-dead gorgeous in this movie. She simply oozes that voluptuous 1940's era sensuality, like Lana Turner or Rita Hayworth. Conway & Knotts are true comedy legends the likes of whom we'll never see again, unfortunately. These two pros can milk more genuine laughter without saying a word, using only body language & facial expressions than a dozen of today's so-called comedians, who can't even make it through a single sentence without dropping a half dozen F-bombs. Conway was a true genius at physical pantomime comedy. He can make you laugh with just a few silly expressions, and Knotts is equally adept. This is a perfect movie to introduce younger viewers to the hilarious antics of these two classic comedians. THE DVD: This standard-def release of THE PRIVATE EYES from Hen's Tooth Video looks pretty darn good considering its age and the fact that it's a small studio film, meaning it likely wasn't given the best treatment over the years. The video portion is mostly clean and free of dirt & debris and the sound mix is clean & clear. It's a shame that the version we get is a pan&scan presentation instead of the proper widescreen aspect I saw when I caught it first-run in theaters back in 1980. A disappointment to be sure, but this is better than nothing at all. The bonus commentary track by Tim Conway & director Lang Elliot is an enjoyable listen.

A must see for all Movie Buffs...old and new
One of the great movies with Tim Conway and Don Knotts (1980)....movies like this is all about acting...not computer graphics...not animation (which I am very found of). Real acting and real movies the way they need to be seen. A good quote from the old day on the box..."A Perfect Saturday Matinee" - Gene Siskel. Take the time to watch all the silliness...slapstick...over the top comedy with a lot of 'character actors' that follow the rest of the cast and crew that work hard on the film. Mystery and suspense, with all the treats you wish you had in all REAL movies you can expect. Excellent script with the right props and sets..lighting...(worked in movies before). Enjoy it with friends and family to the end and you will watch it over and over! well worth the the buy to have for an original movie. When was the last time we saw a movie like this? Blue-ray not worth it...the quality is from 1980...the best your going to get. Enjoy it! I will Marc L. Rhode Island
